I'm tearing down my M2 for repaint. The manual doesn't really get into the order of disassembly. I'm at the point where I need to suspend from the ceiling in my shop and drop which first...ENGINE...FRONT END...SWINGARM. Also does anyone know if the engine and swingarm can stay together without the frame? I'd muchly appreciate any input...Thanks |

You know it! Think of the whole bike as being two halves; the "drive unit" (Motor, rear wheel and schwingarm), and the steering unit (Frame and fork). I usually secure the engine and swingarm, and pull the frame and frontend off the top. There are as many ways as you want, to do this; Pull the forks, pull the swingarm, pull the frame. Raise the bike and drop the motor off the motor block to leave a rolling chassis. "The right way" is what works best for what you need to do to it. Thanks JAS51700 I think I'll pull the forks, then lift the frame off.I'm gonna try to throw together a quick jackstand to support the front of the motor. It looked as if the swingarm and engine/trans could stay together. Thanks for the input |

I usually jack the motor, and then strap off the swingarm to keep it stable. Have fun with it! |

I have a cd service manual that isn't really showing me much about where to start wrenching to break the tube frame away from the swingarm. It looks like I should just go for the Lg allen head bolt in the center but I don't want to damage anything. I'm shootin for frame off this weekend. We'll see how it goes |

That mega-bolt (which has been updated, By the way),is an isolator bolt. You'll pull both of those, 1 one each side, then the 3 or 4 tie-bars, one at rear under the battery box, one on top, one top front (I've seen some with, some without this one), and one very front. The front Isolator bolt is last (top front through motor bracket on the front of the front cylinder head. It's vertical), and if fuel lines, wiring, and miscellaneous stuff like throttle and clutch cables, and engine grounds (Don't forget the idle adjuster), are all undone, the frame should liftoff like Saturn V. The swingarm will remain attached to the motor. (Remember "drive unit"-engine, trans, belt swingarm and rear wheel are a unit) IMPERATIVE! To avoid fire, poor run condition, charging issues, etc, be sure the Ground straps have bare metal and good TIGHT connection when going back together. THIS IS IMPORTANT! |

Kmanning- Support bike as needed, in this case I remove front and rear wheels and bolt my stand to the drive train. Remove bodywork Remove Battery Drain fluids Disconnect oil lines at oil tank Disconnect chassis wiring connections to drive train Remove carburetor Remove header if early (rear primary routed through frame loop) Remove fork cartridges Secure brake calipers to chassis Disconnect all stabilizer links Disconnect isolator mounts Lift chassis from drive train

Will I need to pull the carb before I lift the frame?I need to do intake gaskets anyway but it looks much easier after the frame is out of the way. |

Kevin, mine's a '99 X1,i didn't,in fact i've never separated the intake manifold. HERE'S a link to my X1 exactly one year ago. While down i did the isolators, rocker box gaskets(The paper gaskets were burnt, the new metal ones cool),and swingarm bearings.I would have done the headstock bearings as well but just did them a year earlier.Do'em.They're worth it Oh.Yours is carbureted. You'll need to pull that, but likely NOT the intake manifold (Message edited by ducxl on February 10, 2008) |

The frame is ready to pull. I just can't find a hex to fit that pivot on the swingarm.I might try either Sheldons or Precision.Anyone know the size? Should be off to the sandblaster by end of next week. Then I can play with some drivetrain maintenance. Intake seals,Belt,Swingarm bearings...hopefully if there not too complicated. |

Wow... the bare engine with swingarm still attached looks soooo exotic. I can't believe I have one of those! |

I believe it's 1/2". I didn't have a hex bit that large either, but i did have a cold chisel that was exactly the right size. I cut about 2" off and slipped it into a socket. |
