Had to crack open the Primary case in order to repair Primary Adjustment shoe. After taking the Case Cover off, I noticed that the Primary Sprocket Lock Bolt (Part #4589) was loose. I grabbed the head and out it came. It had sheared in half with the other half of the threaded shaft still screwed into the engine component. I know what needs to be done... needs to be easy'd out. Oh is this gonna be fun!!! Has anyone had this happen to them. AND, is this a regular thread or reverse threaded bolt? There aint squat in the Maint Manual discussing the bolt except in Chapt 6.5 Primary Chain removal with one sentence indicating remove the bolt. Some feedback would be nice if anyone has any... Thanks. |

The hardware list for my '08TT shows p/n4589 as a screw, 9/16-12 X 2-5/16 hex flange head. No other descriptors, so not l/h, and no special grade as to hardness. Hope this helps, Dave |

Thanks Dave. Just making sure it is a standard threaded bolt before I start yank on the shaft with an extractor. Bunp to see if anyone has had this happen to them? |

Update: Extraction was actually pretty easy and successful. Now waiting on American Sport Bike to open up so I can order another Bolt. The next challenge will be trying to find a local Parts store that will rent me a Torque Wrench that goes up to 150ft lbs. |

Update... Replaced the old sheared Main Sprocket Bolt (Al at American Sport Bike does NOT carry it as it is a standard HD part for several HD models) that I got from Oakland HD ($5.95) as well as other items that were found needing to be replaced which included the Primary Adjuster Shoe Assy, an insert for that assy in the Pri Case (threads were stripped) and Clutch Cable. Buttoned her up, filled the Primary with Klotz HD Pri Chain juice (80/90), fired her up, let her idle to op temp, checked for leaks and took her for a 30 mile functional check ride. She ran perfectly and the shifting was smoother than before. I did notice that the very aggravating low freq vibe that I have had for over a year now was completely gone. Hmmmm. I certainly hope that the Sprocket bolt wasn't sheared that long and causing the Stator Assy to wobble etc. I did check all that out when I took the entire Primary Chain Assy off which included the Clutch Basket/Sprocket and Stator Assy. All looked good etc. All in all it was certainly a learning experience and fun. $78 in parts. BUT, well over 12-15 hours worth of detailed work thus saving me well over $1600 or so in labor from the HD Stealer. On a side note, I did some calling around and found that this bolt has in fact sheared in four other 08 XB's that were manu'd within 120 days that mine was. Certainly appears that HD had a faulty batch of bolts that Buell had placed in the XB's from July-Oct 2007.
