ok, the motor is out of the bike, and i have to split the cases for trans work. I pulled a Homer and didn't remove the front pulley first. My two part question is: does the pulley HAVE to be removed to split the cases, and how difficult is it gonna be to remove with the motor out. Any pointers are greatly appreciated. I'm ready to back on the road!

Don't know on an XB, but as I recall on my M2 the transmission just sat inside that 5th gear drive assembly on some needle bearings... so on that bike it would not have been necessary to remove the pully to split the cases.

Of course on that bike it wasn't necessary to split the cases to pull the tranny... so YMMV.

I read somewhere here that it is not necessary that you remove the front pulley when disassemble ,but if you already that far check/replace that bearing to!

Maybe this pictures can help
