I have an 03 xb9s with new front brake pads on it. I am having a pulsing in the front brake lever and the brakes kind of stutter a bit. Also, whenever I grab the rotor it has a bit of movement in it. please help! |

Jbunte - The movement is normal, it is designed that way. The pulsing is a common problem, particularly with the stock pads. It is caused by uneven buildup of pad material on the rotor. Get some 220 grit sand paper and lightly sand your rotor. You do not need to remove the rotor to do this. That should help. |

Or a scotch bright pad. |

Jlnance, Are you serious? Even the newer XB's have loose rotors? I've just discovered the front rotor on my '08 XT has play in it, much like the old front rotor that had to be replaced on my S1W. I know that many of the Jap bikes have "floating" calipers that allow for some play, but I hadn't realized there was such a thing as a "floating" rotor to allow for some play... |

Yes, the XB rotors float. If you put your thumb next to a mounting bolt and push, you should be able to move the rotor about 1/16 of an inch in toward the rim. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6561298.html |

I am surprised people haven't noticed that.. I thought my head bearings were loose when I bought the bike. Brought it back to the dealer. He bounced it while I watched to show me that indeed the tiny slop and click I felt was all in the brake. The pads and the disc moved a touch. I noticed the pads moving the most. Maybe they aren't supposed to .. I am bringing it in to have the rotor checked (pulsing problems) before I sand it and switch pads. No need to put new pads on a cracked or warped rotor). ( hoping its a warranty issue.. if not, It'll be me. I don't pay people $150 per hour unless... well so far... ever. My housekeeper does harder work than a bike technician and .. well I don't pay her that.) My brakes don't "stutter" whatever that means.. Mine just feel like i'm running over rough road when I apply it. Thought it was just the V-twin bouncing me..or uneven paving that I was noticing with the front suspension compressed from braking... but its the brakes (tested it with the engine off). Pretty smooth under 30. But on the highway.. its rough. |

What about tubers? is it normal to have sideways movement on the rotor? I have noticed that the patent filing date is 07/09/2001, my bike is 99 so it has to be different. |

Yes. The rotors "float". All the specs for free play are found in the service manual. "Noticeable" is not abnormal. |
