I just purchased new pushrod bases from NHRS. I am hesitant on doing the job though b/c I don't know what tool to use to remove the screws holding on the PR base covers. The sockets I have won't go on b/c the PR covers are in the way. and I'm afraid I would strip it with an allen wrench. Does anyone know what tool or socket I can use to remove the screws? Also, do you think the dealer would install the new bases for me or will they only do stock parts? (Message edited by haven564 on December 13, 2007) | ||

First remove the pushrod covers? Are they stock (one piece) or two-piece? If one-piece, then you have a significant job on your hands including removal of both rocker boxes and cylinder heads). If two-piece, it is still a significant job but you won't need to remove the cylinder heads. To remove two-piece PR covers just pry them apart with a standard screwdriver. They are spring loaded in a nested tapered fit sort of way, and they should have tabs to facilitate just such a screwdriver removal scenario. A photo would be a huge help. If you are just doing this for cosmetics, I'd say forget it. It isn't worth it. Whatever you decide, you need a service manual and some decent mechanical expertise to do this kind of job. If you are comfortable with that, then the old Buell S1 online manual will work for what you are doing. See the "Engine" section, particularly page 3-11 thru 3-13 and Figure 3-10 on page 3-14 (same as that shown below).  Good luck! (Message edited by blake on December 13, 2007) | ||

Thanks for the response. The base covers are like the ones in the the image you show (#9). I was going to replace the covers with NHRS ones b/c the stock ones are leaking. But I think I would rather live with the small leak rather then risk messing it up more by replacing them. The bike runs great so I think I will just leave it alone and live with the leak. Do leaky bases effect performance in any way? | ||

Haven, The leaks have a way of getting worse over time, don't ask how I know. I have the NRHS (or American Sport Bike) push rod tube holders on all 3 of our big Buells. I also installed a set on the S1 I built last winter. They are a bit tricky but are well worth the hassle. Also, there is no need to pull the heads, but like Blake said, you will have to pull the rocker boxes to get the pushrods out. Remember, the longer pushrods, the one with the redish bands are the EXHAUST pushrods. Brad | ||

I installed them when I did my rocker cover gaskets. It takes three hands to seat the bottom of the pushrods into the base and the top into the rocker box without unseating the O-rings. If you don't have three hands, you're in for an adventure. These pieces look nice, but the cheap looking stockers are much easier to re-install one at a time. |
