Nance, thought you'd get a kick out of Dale Coyner's advice regarding the *unpaved* side of Burkes Garden:

"...I suppose if you had a dual-purpose bike you could attempt to exit 623 on the south end of the valley. It's not a route you'd want to attempt on a regular street bike."

i guess he needs to trade in his Gold Wing for a Road King... ;--)

Did you ever fix the seat latch?

Thanks. Seat tab is still broken. I think I'll have to have a suitable part made and either bolt it in place or have someone weld it in place. I don't do any metal work, so I'll have to pawn that project off on someone else.

FB&D, Carlos, NUTS might know a few routes 'round Roanoke that'll get your heart pumping and smiles spreading. Let me know which way you'd like to go. I am scheduled to leave Saturday morning for an overnight camping foray. I'll be leaving the 'Noke @ 0800 and heading North via an awesome road to breakfast in Paint Bank. I took Carlos and Webe up that way last August; if I remember correctly it helped them round out their squared tires. It'd be nice to have you folks along for a bit of the ride and I can route you to Natural Bridge too. Beware NB is $12 to visit but awfully worht it. Let NUTS know.

funny you should ask. :-)

there was a glitch in our company's computer system yesterday and the w*rk pipeline was clogged up for a bit, which gave me 'n D the perfect excuse to take the rest of the day off and go riding.

yes, it does occasionally truly suck to be self-employed.

on our way back down the Parkway yesterday afternoon i had a blinding flash of Ferrisentric inspiration and aimed the RK off the pavement and into a recently-mowed and beautifully green 'n gold field near Volunteer Gap that has always caught my fancy on the way by, and over hill and dale we careened, doing our best Steve McQueen/Great Escape imitation (but sans the big jump, doncha know).

this field, many acres and quite spectacular in its, um, "fieldness," was never intended as a touring destination for a large, heavy, two-up Harley-Davidson (or any other street bike, for that matter), and at one point, shortly after questioning my sanity for not at all the first time, Denise suggested that a set of knobbies might should be my on my shopping list.

i hope to hook up with Dale Coyner someday. he has a neat writing style and it's obvious from his words he has a good sense of humor.

i think a winter-time circumnavigation of Burkes Garden and the surrounding environs with Mr. Coyner and y'all - including, natch, the infamous glacier crossing - would be a real eyeball-opener for him. :-)

I am not familiar with Dale Conyer, do you have a link?

I have been craving another Garden expedition. The altitude of the mountain crossing would be nice now that it is SUMMER, and we wouldn't have to deal with any of that pesky ice stuff.

I've got my son this weekend.

He has actually been riding with me recently, which is a new interest of his. I've toyed with the idea of riding up there with him, but I don't think he is ready for a 200 mile trip yet (actually 2 of them.) He can do Michaels w/o any problems though, and that's a 60 mile round trip. I may see if he is up for a Morrow Mtn run on Sat or Sun. You ever been to the Uwaharies?

I'm assuming Dale's comment was from one of his books and not a personal conversation you had with him?

It's a nice ride, and there is a swimming pool at Morrow Mtn if you want to cool down at the end of it (thats why my kids like to go.)

I am reluctant to suggest meeting there, as my son may not be up for the trip. But it's U4euh and Rubberdowns neck of the woods. If they are up for a trip this weekend, I'd certainly try and make it myself, son in tow.

Hello from a very tired 1313 in Berlin. Went to the Berlin Buell dealer and, even though it was cool, it just wasn't the same as last year. There is some cool European Buell gear over here - if only they had my size...

Saw a black XB9R riding in Berlin afterwards!

My Rescuers

Thank you to everyone for all the offers of help tonight. It is a great feeling to know people are willing to help you.

My Uly has no balls.

The end of the spacer is chewed up a little, as is the edge of the wheel where the spacer rubbed against it. I don't know if it damaged the wheel to the point it needs to be replaced. I'll have to pull the bearing remains to before that can be determined. I can't imagine that RP stocks the spacer, so I'm probably down for a few days.

Thanks for the stand Mark. The bike is up on it right now. Thats much better than the Jack, since it may sit there for a few days.

Jim N, who are your rescuers shown above, and what happened?

Oldog, there's still plenty of leftover patina on the RK from Big Jim's Ride, but it was pretty comical to note that i had vegetation hanging from the undercarriage of the bike when i put it away the other night.

my new battle cry: "Hay, watch this!"

:-)

Good to see you Nance, even under the circumstances. I have a spare XB rear wheel if you need one for a while. Your pulley would need to be mounted on it. I have a tire changer so if need be, bring your wheel down and we can switch them out. Glad I could help in the effort.
