Hey guys... I am looking at possibly buying a recked XB12R that has front end damage. I can get the bike for probably 2 grand and might possibly be able to trade a 4 wheeler I have for it. I am gonna go and look at the bike this weekend.

Question 1) Would ya'll even consider buying a wrecked bike and fixing it up?

Question 2) What do I need to look at on the bike to make sure it will be a worthwhile project?

I am not new to fixing stuff as I have built a Mustang GT thats pretty quick. I have the time and the space to do it also. Any advice is appreciated

Josh

In my opinion I would stay away from it if the frame is banged up, scratches and stuff that can be hidden by media blasting and powder coating arent bad, or stuff that you can be covered up with frame pucks is easily able to be dealt with.
Just do your homework prior to putting money down, those parts add up quickly. The buells are an easy bike to work on, just make sure to buy the service manual and an assembly manual if you can get ahold of one. Your local dealership should have everything you need, and dont forget to buy lots of locktite.

Get close up pics of the steering head area.
If its not too bad up were everything will mount I'd try it.
But if that area is in ANY way twisted or bent I'd pass.

I'd be more concerned about the engine mounts than the frame. The frame takes HUGE damage without problems.

If it looks like the front isolator, the top tie-rod (heads-to-chassis) or rear mount/isolator - have been bent - you have to be willing to write off the chassis and mounts.

Both wheels OK? You said front end damage.

2 grand isn't bad. That's about what you'd pay for a salvage engine with low miles. It's worth checking out BUT you might still be needing a chassis, engine mounts and a set of forks. Use that as a negotiating point.
