Arrrgh! That F*@%$!G rear axle is pissing me off. I was hoping to put my new Drummer on tonight, but of course can't get rear axle un-seized. Just added pene-oil hopefully tomorrow morning will go better, or I'll drop by the local dealer an have them break it (hopefully just figuratively not literally) free. Love my buell, hate all the fasteners!

Just an FYI you dont have to take the rear wheel off to get the muffler off. The service manual sez to do so but you can get it with our doing so.


Also my axle was stuck last time I went to take it off, I was trying to take it apart with a 3/8 drive ratchet, Once I tryed with the 1/2 inch breaker bar it came right apart. Just a hint.

Yeah, when I took my stock muffler off (and reinstalled it), you don't have to remove the rear wheel, just loosen up the tension for the belt. BTW, the pulley is solid mounted with only two bolts. You don't have to remove the pully either, but it helps and takes a minute extra.

Yeah....not trying to get rear wheel off......just trying to take a few turns on the F*@%$!G rear axle to loosen belt tension. But even though the F*@%$!G rear axle is still tight I have had a few fingers of the good stuff from Lynchburg Tenn. and the tension is starting to come off me! Thanks for the input and suggestions...I'll try a bigger hammer...er breaker bar tomorrow too.

Pinch Bolt......yipper...sitting on floor beside bike...took it all the way out and swore at it....just cause I could take his big brother out and swear at him! JD & Ice #4.....they are starting to get pretty smooth now!

I have taken my exhaust off many times without having to loosen the belt. I can take a can off in about a minute, done it about 20 times over a two year period installing and taking off all the stock exhausts I messed around with.

ChadHargis and I both swapped out our stock for race exhaust without removing rear wheel or loosening the belt. We took the pulley cover off and used a socket extension to get to the clamp.

You are just swapping out the muffler, right.

OK....just for shits and grins I'll try and extension and a wobble to see if I can wiggle in around the tensioner pully.......But it looks pretty tight in there, and I am not feeling the love on pulling this one off. I think when I do get it all off, I'm gonna reverse the clamps so the bolts will face the left side of the bike and this won't ever be an issue again!

I could hear the music from Apocalypse Now, and Bobby Duval yelling over my shoulder...."I love when an exhaust comes off in the morning....it smells like VICTORY" Thanks Bad Webber Bros, you gave me the ability to walk away over night, vent collect tips and tricks, then see it with fresh eyes in the morning. By spinning the tensioner pulley some I was able to get to the torca bolts and voila the D&D pipe is off. My new Drummer is hanging. I'm gonna eat some breakfast... do a little victory dance then go tighten everything down. Put on some leather and go run some miles to get the race ECM used to the Drummer, then go scare the living tar outta myself and some corners. Maybe I'll try to get cocky this afternoon and try to put the Mueller clutch kit on to keep my wife happy too.

You still have a rear wheel that won't come off when you need it to.

Get a half inch drive breaker bar and a cheater pipe and that hummer should come right off.

Take your axle nut to a machine shop and have them weld the center where the c-clip is. The nut flexes and eats up the torque you are applying. When my axle got stuck I borrowed Shreds axle tool that was welded and it came right out.

Also Torque it to spec and use a little anti-seize on the threads and where it rides on the bearings, I have done mine this way and can get it off with a 3/8 ratchet.

No man I sure dont.

Just remove the c-clip, fill in the gap with the weld and grind it smooth.

It will want to fall inside the axle after that but you have a lot more force applied to the axle afterward.

Maybe you could leave a little lip on it in the middle to keep it from falling inside.

I'll do my best to explain it to him and see how we do. I'm in sales, he is in production. This has disaster written all over it. But it should be fun to watch. Drummer works great though. I installed the Mueller clutch tonight too. Just need to get my hot lil hands on a torque wrench and tighten up some bolts and I am good to go!

I'm coming in late and playing catch up. Why would you/me have to take off the rear wheel or loosen the belt to take the exhaust off? I removed my stock exhaust a year ago and never touched the wheel or belt.

I have to admit, I didn't use a book or something like that, I just took the muffler off. Please don't view this as a sarcastic question, I'm only trying to see if I missed something when I did mine.

I watched a friend loosen the belt to get the tensioner pulley off to get easier access to the torca clamps. Seemed really easy and painless.......unless of course the rear axle is seized. I was able to get an extension and wobble through the tensioner pulley to get the clamps off in the end. But now have broke rear axle free and talked smoothly to my bike as I rubbed her parts gently with anti-seize......puuuurrrrrr. I love my XB again...at least for the moment

I needed to remove my rear axle for tire replacement. Just like everyone, I discovered the axle was frozen... and like everyone, I did the temper dance. Damn was I pissed!! I was using a 1/2 driver and breaker bar with a front fork tube for added leverage. I thought I was going to break the swing-arm, I was twisting it so much. Still, it didn't break it loose. Then I remembered I purchased an electric impact wrench for just these occasions. Spun that dog off with little effort. I cleaned all the corrosion and krap off, applied grease to the threads and reinstalled. All better.

And yes, I agree you don't have to remove the rear tire to install a muffler.

I borrowed Shreds axle tool that was welded and it came right out.
Shred's is welded because I broke it in half trying to get my axle out, the first time.
What I ended up doing, after we got the tool welded, was put a breaker bar on the socket wrench and stood on it, and just barely bounced on it, about 5 minutes later BANG! it was off and all was good. I have not ever put it back on with out anti-seize.

Tried welding mine with Oxy Act. That little washer in the middle *quickly* becomes "filler rod". I built up a lip, but have not ground things back down clean yet.

To others considering it, I would just leave the factory part alone and sitting in your bag under your seat, and run to the hardware store to get two nuts and a bolt and perhaps three thick washers, and start with that for the welding and fabrication. It's not hollow and will no doubt weld up better.

If your bits are zinc coated, make sure you have good ventalation before you weld. It produces toxic gas.

I'll shoot some pictures of how mine ended up tonight.

same experience for me as Glitch except i sheared my socket adapter in half. hahaa.

also used a breaker bar and bounced on it over the course of two days. two pissed to tackle it in one day. second day of bouncing. sucker came loose. and the dealer DID put anti-seize on it. (rear wheel has been off at two different dealers in the past)

this time, i layered so much anti-seize on the treads, axle, bearing contact spots, etc that i'm STILL cleaning up anti-seize from my garage EVERYWHERE. hahaa. damn that stuff is gooey.
