I'm SURE this has been discussed before but...has anyone painted there wheels? I'd like to just use a black rattle can. I used the VHT Caliper paint on my primary with good results. Any suggestions would be helpful. (think -cheap-)

I personally like the rattle can engine paints. they might be a little bit more exspensive but they cure a lot tougher with some heat. I painted alot of components to my project truck with it. including intake manifold engine block heads oilpan timming cover and misc stuff. I also painted my grill and dash board (metal) with it. when its dry to the touch I leave it out in the sun for a few hours it brings it up to about 120 degrees. they say you can bake it in an oven to really cure it but that is if you can fit it.

the end result comes out really well. just make sure you prep the surface well cause its all in the prep work

I agree with the prep work which would bring me to the next question, should I prep OVER the Amber coating, or strip it and prime it? I stripped and primed the primary with etching primer.

I would at least sand the amber clear coat down a bit before priming. The wheels are already painted so that should do it.

The back is fine. the front has chips in the paint from mounting a tire but otherwise solid

No, I'm mainly trying to make the front one I have look presentable! It's got some paint chiping and I know I'll never be able to match the amber. My bike is black so... painting it black seemed like a viable alternative. Even if it doesn't last for ever, I can at least repaint it from time to time as I change tires.

its all in the prep work as long as u have a rough surface for the paint to stick to u should be fine.

My wheels are painted in the center with a polished lip and then a hard clear coat to resist chips. 14k miles and counting.

VERY nice! I Like that. I Painted my Primary Black and painted the inspection covers a Metallic black with a clear coat.I still need to do the Cam cover. What kind of paint did you use?
