To day was my first day with my brand new Buell XB12S. I took it for a ride for several ours, heated it well up before I twisted the throttle. I heated it up several times and let it cool down a bit before I continued riding and I had a wonderful time for several ours. Then it started to leak oil from the oil cooler, so I called the local HD dealer and told them, they told me to tighten the hoses to the oil cooler just a little bit and I did. But after a while the bike started to freaking piss oil! Can anyone tell me what has happend and what to do with it. Because my local dealer can't and they are too far away to just deliver it back. And by the way, I did not loosen the hoses that I am sure about.

Thanks

Richard - Take the bike to a dealer and get them to fix it. It is currently their problem, if you mess it up, it becomes your problem.

Yes, what Jim said. My Firebolt developed a slight mist from one of the oil cooler hoses after the first ride. The second ride was back to the shop.

Happened to mine also. The fittings put in by the factory were cross threaded, then the oil pump was ruined because of it, they gave me a new oil pump.

if you are going to do it yourself (taking a chance w/ your warranty) take the oil line off and put some teflon paste on the threads and put it back together.

Why is this so common. Even on brand new bikes... My bike is an 03 and I kind of expected it to happen.

I know it's not good practice to put teflon tape on the threads, but I did and it worked well and still holding. Not a drop of oil since.

PS: be careful tightening, use a wrench to brace the other end while you tighten. I snapped a fitting off sorta of broke off like butter.

Isham beat me to it - that angle fitting is fragile to aggressive wrenching!

(don't ask me how I know... "I have this friend who broke the fitting...")

Get it back to the dealer, and if they are not responsive, go to another dealer.

Buell customer service was good with me when the dealer was a bulls&itter. Court hooked me up with the number.

I don't know if a local Harley dealer could do the work if the Buell dealers are too far. At some point Buell will have to beef up the service network with HD dealers, at least for warranty issues when geography is a problem for the customer.

same thing here, misting at both fittings when new, even when snugged up. dealer 'fixed' with teflon tape. mist returned anyway, first from one fitting... now mists from both. i just wipe it clean periodically.

agree with the others... its the dealers issue to fix for you, trailer it.

>>>>Can anyone tell me what has happend and what to do with it.
A: Yes, the authorized Buell tech who fixes it.

>>>>Because my local dealer can't and they are too far away to just deliver it back.

A: Your dealer will come pick it up. They are R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-B-L-E for fixing the problem. How far they are, at this point, is their, not your, problem.

>>> And by the way, I did not loosen the hoses that I am sure about.

A: No one thinks or has implied you did.

Stop where you are. Park the motorcycle in a safe place. Call the dealer, explain the situation and see when they can pick it up. Do NOT compromise things by trying to do it yourself and risking ASSUMING the responsibility. Once you start messing with it, it's your baby....that's a fact Jack!

Ditto Court, do NOT attempt to fix this yourself if you value your warranty. If you do try, and something goes wrong, you may find yourself in a bad spot.
A brand new bike should be in perfect running condition, and if it is not, it is the dealer/makers responsibility to make it so.
I would suggest calling buell customer service if you do not get any support from the dealer, and explain to them what is going on.

Please just call the dealer and let them know. I'm not one to jump to the bad dealer conclusion. These guys are in the business of selling you stuff, they want you happy.

Call them and politely explain that your brand spankin' new bike has something wrong with it and it can't be ridden in.

Simple.

They should respond promptly.

Most of all be polite, yet clear about your expectations.

Please just call the dealer and let them know.

My suggestion was to call BCS in the event that the dealer was not responsive. Hence the "...if you don't get any support from the dealer" part of that statement.}

I had the same problem with my bike when it was brand new...lost 2/3 of my oil in the street before I noticed it. The dealer tightened the fittings and replaced the oil and filter for me no questions asked. Didn't go far enough to damage the motor.

I recently had my oil cooler and lines replaced under warranty. No leaks (well, the fittings were always a bit moist, enough to look dirty)--but the problem was that one nut was crosstheaded fron the factory. The tech who did the warranty work agreed with me--whoever tightened that nut on there musta worked at it!

Anyway, even though there was no real leakage, I was concerned about the fitting (if I ever did have to undo it, I'd never get it back together again). No problem, they replaced the cooler and both lines under warranty.

The only thing that annoyed me was that when I got the bike back, it was down about one pint of oil...apparently, besides the oil lost when the original cooler and lines were removed, the tech had to remove the oil filter--which he replaced with a new one without prefilling. When I asked about it, he suggested the bike had only lost a little bit of oil, and not to worry...

Richard:

I see you are in Norway. If that presents any special problems or you need any help, I'd be thrilled to do whatever I can, just drop me a note.

Henrik can tell you how good my Norwegian is.
