Does it serve a purpose other than aesthetics?

prevent premature wear of the exhaust due to rust buildup... and some of those nastly rocks possibly chipping cooling fins off (if they manage to fling up hard enough).

I'm sure it affects air flow in a positive fashion... at speed it "should" build a little more pressure above it which would be feeding the intake. It would also partly break up the flow for the riders feet and maybe help separate it for the lower legs. It looks like it would help flow under the intake scoops as well, which could aid cooling and help reduce the negative pressure pocket under the tail section...

Probably keeps rocks off of the oil filter as well : ).

Hey Drake! How's OOOOOOOOOOOOOOklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plains!?

I just bought an XB9R fixer upper opportunity from a local Chopper shop that buys repoed and wrecked bikes. I asked about the chin fairing because it is missing.

I'm going to try to post up on KCLW soon, but my fam is in town and yelling at me to get off the computer.
