After hard braking (rear wheel dancing) at the end of the front straight at VIR North I flicked the bike into the right hander and when I rolled on the throttle to accelerate there was a momentary loss of power. It only happened under very aggressive braking with less than a half tank of fuel.

I "solved" the problem by topping off the tank before each session which leads me to think the problem is related to fuel starvation. I used the search function to see if there are any other posts on this subject but did not find any. I suspect there may be info available on this subject but I'm not using the right keywords.

I'd appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction?

common problem for racers on pre 05 buells. My brother Diablomichael ran into it with our race bike too.
there are 3 fixes

1. keep fuel topped up
2. put fuel cell foam in tank. (this is best accomplished by pulling fuel pump and putting it in from there)
3. updating to newer style fuel pump. they changed the pick-up to prevent starvation. If you do this one
you might as well install the foam too...kind of a belt and suspenders approach

Hope this helps

I didn't think I was the only one to experience this.

Thanks for the info.

Now I have to decide what to do before my next track day.

number 3 is best, but most expensive, but you probably already figured out I ranked them by cost.

Hey, Stephen. Did you find some brake pads?

I have heard of the starvation deal, but have not experienced it with my bike. I ran at VIR 2 weeks ago(what a blast!) and ran less than a half tank all day, on purpose. The only problem I had was dragging the peg feeler in turn 1, passing on the outside. One of the instructors saw it and politely suggested that I remove them, problem solved.

So, who you riding with, TPM? I went with Cornerspeed. Enjoyed it so much, I'm going back on the 19th.

p.s. sorry if I hijacked the thread

You have to really be pushing to run into the problem. Street riders will (almost) never see it.

Even some novice racers aren't pushing hard enough to run into it. Usually it happens
during LATE braking maneuvers at the end of a straight.

Good diagnosis Tso. I needed help on the site to figure it out.

It happens to my 2003 everytime I'm at the track without a fairly full tank. I hate keeping extra fuel when at track speeds, but it is better than getting rear-ended mid corner becuase you are stalling out.

I don't want to dump $ into a fix. I wish Buell would do something for track riders and racers.

I used to have a problem with this on the street, eventually gave up and quit braking as hard. It'll still do it whenever I'm bedding in a new set of pads, but other than that it doesn't bother me. I'm not fast enough to have the problem show up at the track.

I don't remember the exact cost of the new fuel pump, but I *think* it was about as much as a new set of tires. Too much for street riding, but if I decided to get serious about track time it would be at the top of my upgrade list.

It happened to me bedding in lyndalls, and whenever I get a little happy going down my street and go deep at the stop sign.

I've stalled it (momentarly) on the street, you have to be on the brakes HARD.

Tank,

Took it easy on the brakes and survived the day safely. Had I had new pads I would have been more aggressive with my braking. But that would have exacerbated my fuel starvation problem.

This weekend was my first TPM event. They were organized and had great coaches. Comparing NESBA, STT and TPM I'd say TPM is the better of the three. I've heard good things about Cornerspeed as well.

I haven't improved my skills enough to drag a peg.....yet. But it's good to know it's not rumor.

Diablobrian,

As you know, Buells are not built for straight line speed so the only way to put the IL4s behind is to outbrake them into the fast stuff and then put enough time into them in the technical stuff so they don't have a chance to pass you on the straights.
