Have an '06 xb12ss. Recently noticed a "knocking" noise coming from the motor when it's hot and I give it a liberal amount of throttle. Any ideas of what might be causing this noise? It only occurs when the motor is hot and I'm running up the rpm's under heavy throttle.

Have the dealer check the primary nut. There is a service bulletin out about this.
The torque value has been changed to fix this problem.

CHECK YOUR OIL!!!! add as needed. then take it to the dealer and they will more than likely tell you it is normal. check your oil frequently. i would suggest every 500 miles or every other tank of fuel till you hit your second oil change then maybe around 1000 after that. first oil change at 1000 (at dealer) then 2500 after that. VERY IMPORTANT!! disregard that the owners manual says 5000 mile intervals. this is if you haven't already gone over 1000 miles yet. these engines have a self changing oil system built into the bike. the only problem is that YOU have to add the oil. these are air/oil cooled V-Twins it is normal for them to use oil. dealership were i take my bike too says and i quote "one quart of oil per 1000 miles is normal." no lie.

it's hot - try a different brand of gas...... the pinging is normal on hot days conditions.. esp. if your running a dead stock bike (lean)... it will be way worse or harmful if you pipe and K&N without putting in a race ecm or getting a tune to richen up the A/F mixture.....

Mine made the knocking sound a couple of weeks ago. I got stuck at a faulty light and sat in traffic for a little bit. Turns out I had to turn around and come back through the same light. It did not make any abnormal sounds idling and moving forward slowly, but when I got through the traffic and accelerated, it sounded terrible. After a mile or two, it quit and has not done it since. I have heard some pinging when its is hot, but this was a heavy knocking sound.
