I picked up my Bike this morning and had a Bill of $72.Took it in due to the extreme and I mean very extreme knocking when the engine was hot. Said it was a maitanance problem not a factory problem, complained about this from the beginning, but didn't want to leave it for a week, then when it got cold the ignition retarded and it ran pretty good, then a couple weeks ago when it got really warm I thought the engine was coming apart. After talking to the mechanics and badweb, I figured it was covered under the warranty. Wrong. Then I am told that this has to be adjusted regularly and I am like "you mean that it has a built in money maker for the dealers?" or I have to learn to and buy the equipment to set the timing. He said the factory sets it according to the EPA and not so that it actually doesn't sound like I have pieces slapping around in the Engine. First time since I have owned this bike that I am regretting it.

Timing should never need to be changed and if it does it's a rare case. Anyways, have you called customer service over this?

I would do what Cataract said and follow-up on that issue......seriously!

I would definitely call customer service.
It sounds like a warranty item to me.

I cant understand a dealer not wanting to cover most anything under warranty because they get paid for it unless buell rejects warranty claims on a regular basis. I did warranty work on consumer electronics for years and loved it when someone brought something in under warranty $Cha-Ching$ warranty claim.

Find a new dealer if you can. Thats gotta be the flywheel sprocket shaft nut retorque deal. I dont know if its warranty but I would think any good dealer would do it for you.

Zxz - Find a dealer that will take care of this for you. If there is a chance it is maintanance related HD will not pay the dealer for working on your bike. You might have to pay a dealership to service the bike so they can document the service to HD.

Your warranty is for 2 years, if you have a big problem find out sooner than later.

Mramsey - Warranty work, if profitable at all, is the least profitably work a HD/Buell service department can do.

That being said, they should take care of him. Good dealerships understand this and set asside funds for "customer goodwill".

Well, right after writing that I got a call that my Dad had been taken by ambulance to the hospital about 75 miles from here. So I hopped on my bike and rode to the hospital(turns out he may have had a minor heart attack-imagine my suprise when I found out he had a heart) but I digress, anyway he was resting and asked If I could run and get his glasses..No Problem. They were on his Ultra Classic that had been entered in a bike show at a HD bar. I got stares, everyone stopped to look at my bike. Anyway figured I would show off a little got into it hard leaving, 1st gear, front wheel off the ground-no suprise. 2nd gear, wheel off the ground,had to slightly check up as it continued skyward-was thinking that was unusually easy. 3rd gear, wheel comes up...now thats rare and had to ease up there to. Now 4th gear and the wheel came up, I have never had that happen. Now my bike is 100% stock, do you mean to tell me that Buell has detuned them by that much? Come on, I just didn't know what I was missing.

do you mean to tell me that Buell has detuned them by that much?

Unless something has changed since my time at Buell, the engines timing is set on the line at Harley-Davidson's Capitol Drive Engine Assembly Plant.

Your ignition timing should be inspected every 10k, per service manual.

Yes, checking & adjusting the ignition timing is part of regular maintenance, along with TPS resets & the like. It's just a part of regular maintenance on the DDFI II system. The static timing is not hard, and there is an inductive pickup that I believe a timing light can be hooked up to (yellow wire loop under seat on Lightning & Ulysses models, under front windscreen on Firebolt models). I know it's primarily there for Dyno purposes, but should work for timing too.

Yeah, well I have had this problem since I bought the bike and I talked to the mechanics and all of them gave me the easiest answer they could. Not a one said I believe you should let us check it out. I had no less than 3 mechanics all tell me it was my fuel. I switched fuel and even added octane booster (at mechanics suggestion). Which of course worked. Finally it got cold enough I had no problems from it till it got warmer here recently. I decided then that its not just a fuel problem. And then I find more power from the recent adjustment. To gain noticeble power the timming must have been very far off the correct timing, as I have never had that much power since I bought the bike.

Most Octane boosters will damage your o2 sensor. beware.

Completely stock and front end coming up in 3rd and 4th? What did they do to the timing? Mine has 2200 miles and with the race ecm and Jardine it comes up in 2nd with me yanking.

Timing truly is critical, and can recover lost power if really out of adjustment. Hate to hear that it took so long to diagnose a problem like that. Hope it doesn't happen again. Something that noticeable sounds like it should have been caught during setup. Sometimes it happens after the engine is broken in, hence service intervals.

Well, thats it Buell said it should have been fixed at the 1000 mile mark. It was told that I was running bad fuel then. So spent more than a month trying diffrent fuels, then told to run octane booster...guess next time I will not listen to the service techs.
