Anyone know if there are other bikes that are mounting the muffler under the bike like the Buells? I don't keep up with bikes from other companies; just wondering if many bike makers are doing this now? I noticed the Ninja 650R has it mounted under the engine.

How long have other bike makers been doing this for? Was Buell first?

New Yamaha R6 too. This is the first year doing it for Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawi as far as I know...it's Honda's turn now.

Patent law has a lot to do with the "design intent".

I'm sure the mufflers are there for different "packaging" reasons according to the other manufacturers lawyers.

I wouldn't be surprised top see some fur fly over it though. Go Buell!

I believe the patent expired this year.

At least thats what I got from working back from a date Court gave me. If you want to check that, look at the Buell commercial where they give the number and look it up online.

I believe we're also looking at the 'signifigant' design variation. Most of the IL4's have an additional pipe exiting the bodywork and poking up by the rear wheel. Also, I'm pretty sure at least one of them is a 'flat' can, as opposed to Buells rounded unit. There are ways around it.. and time on a patent is a big helper..
