I am thinking about it. Are all the airboxes and covers compatable across the XB line? Does a Uly/SS cover fit on an 05 XB9SX?

Why do you need a Uly/Ss cover? The color you want?

But, yes, I do believe they will fit.

Yes, I would like the 06 air box for the holes in it and the cover for the color. I like the black cover with the silver/magnesium lettering.

All '06 models have the same intake.

I will make the switch to the new '06 cover at some point from my '03 cover. The grill on the new ones looks great! I think it's a good idea Alex, post a pic if you do it

I just made my own vented outer box this weekend. I think it looks pretty good. I'll post some pics later...let me know what you think.

That's awesome blackxb9!

I have to ask, did you remove the piece that you drilled holes in? I have debating doing a similar modification, but I wanted to chat with someone who had done it and find out a little more.

I'd love to hear some details!

Thanks guys. To answer your question Trevor...

"did you remove the piece that you drilled holes in?"

No I didn't remove the piece around the cover. I propped the whole outer cover up on my work bench and drilled it. I just started in the middle with a very small drill bit. I increased the size of the bit each time until finally going to the largest bit I had...not sure of the size. By increasing the bit in increments it helps ensure hole location. Don't drill with a large bit to start. I premarked the holes with a pencil, stood back and gave it a good look. Mark twice and drill once. After I did the bigger air holes, I went back and added the smaller holes between. It took some time and patience to make everything right but I think it was worth it.}

Nice! I like your homemade job better than the new stock look! Would do it my self but am concerned about riding in heavy rain. Anyone have anything to say about this mod and water?

the 12 exhaust actuator is bolted down to the air box to, not like my 04 just sitting in a foam holder

Skyguy, drilling this mod would be similar to having the stock '06 intake screen.
The minimal amount of water that could get in, would just dribble down the front of the inner airbox, the same that would happen if any water got past the fuel cap area.
There is only a fraction of distance between the '06 intake screen and the inner airbox cover, and the inner cover is almost higher than the top of the mesh screen. (So no water could get to the exhaust actuator). (The '06 Translucent covers also come with a small cover over the actuator; more for appearance than any protection.)

Hope this helps.

"Would do it my self but am concerned about riding in heavy rain. Anyone have anything to say about this mod and water?"

Personally I won't ride in heavy rain. If I get caught out in it I pull under a bridge. Light rain shouldn't be a factor. It should evaporate from the heat before causing a problem. But I won't find out until this Spring.

Nowhere in the '06 owners manual does it say "Don't ride in the rain"!! (That I remember).
The '06 intake mesh screen is more open than this drilling mod.
Surely the bike was designed to handle a downpour without major problems?

While all of the 06's have that new intake behind the gas cap, if you look at the inner airbox cover, you'll find that the opening (intake) of the inner airbox bover is around to the side. There is no opportunity [stock] for water to enter directly. Air snakes around and into the airbox, while water should fall and dribble away long before it could get back there...
