Guys --

Fired up my new (to me) 2003 XB9R and took it for a run. Weirdly, it takes several seconds to (slowly) come down on revs -- making riding nigh impossible.

What gives? This has to be a computer thing, as the cable isn't sticking.

Ideas?

Maybe an intake manifold leak?

Had sort of the same problem. Turned out that I messed up with the idle adjustment when I reset TPS. I would flick throttle and it would hang around 1500 rpm then gradually come down. Once I reset TPS again and adjusted the idle correctly problem was gone.

This is REALLY a problem. It takes SEVERAL SECONDS to get from 4000 to 1000 -- and HANGS at the higher end of the rev range before coming down.

I remember this on carbureted bikes that had stuck floats, but this is baffling.

I'll check the intake manifold...

Just adjust your idle. Little allen hex just inside the left air scoop. No need for a TPS reset. Mine did the same thing. No biggie.

Was it really cold out where you are?

I had this happen the other weekend, twice if I recall.
It was a rather cold day.

Riding again on a warmer day, never did it again...

Blacksunshine --

Turned down the idle -- went for another ride -- a little better. Methinks the Buell needs a good thrashing, as it appears that she has been "broken in" the factory-reccommended way (which is WRONG).

Midknyte --

It's 80 degrees PLUS in Atlanta today.

I'll take the bike to work the LONG way in the a.m. -- rev it hard and get some serious engine braking going -- and get those rings set in right.

Curious, though. Any other theories?

Turn down the idle would be my initial guess...

I'm thinking this bike can idle at or a bit below 1000 -- less stress as the tranny clunks into first gear.

Thawts?

Did you trailer it back from Cleveland? Maybe with the elevation change, the ECM needs to adjust? Ride it at a steady 3500 rpm a few times (shutting it off between each run and see if it settles down.

Trailered it. As said, will ride it to work in the a.m. and see what happens.

Good group. Good suggestions all.

Thanks,

reset your tps, this has happened to me and a number of my buddies.

B_S, A4TR had this happen, so did B-666, TPS resets fixed both of them.

Dont idle the bike lower than 1000 rpm either, the lower rps will cause the bike to overheat

Mine does that all the time when the temperature changes between rides. After a while the ECM gets it figured out and drops to idle normally.

OK then I'm not crazy. although it may work for some I was giving my personal experience. Try all thats posted. But like I said in my issue cleared when I reset TPS and redid the idle.

I can not set my idle above 1000RPMs or it hangs up. It has always done it and I have had the TPS reset twice and have tried adjusting the cables. I just keep it set at 1000 and it is no problem.

Buellerx, sounds to me like you have stacked-tolerances on your TPS mounting or an air leak. I had exactly the same problem with my Twin inlet set-up and ended-up slotting the TPS mounting to enable it to be moved a little and unconfuse the ECU. That shouldn't be necessary on a standard bike.
See if someone close to you has the techlusion dongle thing and check the setting of the TPS, or have it reset at another dealership, since not every tech understands it.
spray wd40 or something around the inlets when the engine is ticking over and see if it speeds up or slows down, which can indicate an inlet leak.
Swap the tps for another and see if it makes a difference.

Get ready for a fight!!!!!!!!
If you want to break-in a push-rod engine that way, be my guest.
I've got close to 40thousand miles on mine now, and broke mine in the recommended way. No complaints.

You going to the Vortex tonight?

You going to the Vortex tonight?

Not tonight. Busy at work.

In Canada next week, so probably be a few Thursdays before I make it up there (hopefully with a new exhaust).

Also, I broke in both my pushrod Guzzis that way with fine results. To each his own, but his logic makes perfect sense to me.

I'm assuming this air intake leak is at the throttle bodies. As I don't yet have a factory workshop manual, could anyone more knowledgeable walk me through the process so I could do it at home this evening.

Thanks.

Spray some wd40 around the header flanges n if the idle changes you have a leak.
I'd be willing to bet its JUST the idle.

Buelltroll --

Assuming it's JUST the idle -- what more can I do?

I've already ajusted it up and down with no results.

Tricks? Tips?

Did you ride it hard for 20 minutes or so?
Have to adjust it while the bike is hot.
have you checked the throttle cable for kinks?
Or mabye its just adjusted to tight?
