It's all personal preference. The old style is bigger (wider). The new style is a little taller, but angled down for a better view of the gauges (which is a bonus if you're short...not an issue for me).

The map affixes with velcro and three plastic latches that hold it down nicely, unlike the old style which is only velcro.

The rain cover is also different - the new style goes over the entire bag and has a clear top to view the the map case. It's a little awkward because it's tall enough to cover the bag when expanded. The little pouch in front won't let you put the rain cover on with it attached. Take it off and toss it in the bag to get it to fit.

They did a better job with the fabric used for the straps, but they reversed the buckles (female vs. male) so you can't swap them (old and new bags) back and forth as I hoped. This also creates a problem if you ever ride with the tank bag off. The two female buckles that bolt to the airbox cover tend to flip out. No problem until you go to turn the handlebars to full lock (like when parking). Because it's an opening the forks tend to catch on it - I've actually cracked one half of mine because of this design flaw.

The zippers on the new system are better to - they're made to attempt to keep water from getting in through the zipper. They do pretty well and overall I like the improvement to fit and function. The back strap is adjustable so you can keep the tension tight.

I have used the old style for a little over a year. I like it but the Buell on the sides is already fading and my demo sits inside or in the shade everyday.
I think the new bag is better quality, just different looking.
I have one old style bag left.
Plenty of new style.
10% discount on either one.

what chris said...
I bought the old bag from him and am very pleased with it. I would have gotten the new style but didn't like the slant. An added bonus to the old style is that you can strap it on the tail of the lightnings. I like to put the junk in the trunk...

Glad to hear the new style is an improvement. I've got mine on order along with the tail bag that clips into the saddle bags.

Cruisin, the way to keep the buckles from getting broken is to point them toward the front of the bike (hanging down). Then they lie flat against the frame and the forks don't crush 'em.

Dogwood, I second your motion. I never liked having a big ol' tank bag in front (screwed up my aero), so I hooked up the buckles to the seat bolts, had a huge trunk!

The only thing I don't like about the old style tank bag is when the handlebars are on the right lock, my starter button is depressed. This makes maneuvering around the garage very interesting. I like the idea of putting on the back of my CityX, I will have to try that.

Well, I've never been a fan of tank bags (though I admit I've never owned one), but this past weekend trip with the wife (2-up) and 2 backpacks, was just too snug. Could only fit slim rain gear in mine before it started crowding us.

Thought if I could unload a bit to the front of me it might help. Leaning towards the new bag I guess.

Unfortunately, the saddle bags are not an option (read big warning in red about death). Though I wonder if that's just for legal purposes and you actually could get a passenger on there with them installed. Doesn't look like it, but anyone want to comment on that?

I have no experience with the old bag, but I really like the new bag. Ive owned plenty of tank bags in the past and this one has the best design and functionality by far. The angle, because I am short, is important in aiding the view of the gauges. I like how it has a bunch of pockets on top of just the main section and the map pocket is designed very well.

It does not get in my way at all.

Thanks Elff, you've probably clinched it.
