Bike has been at the dealership for 3 weeks now. Waiting on a back ordered Stator. I'm gonna call Buell Customer service and see if they will let me not pay for 1 month since the bike is taking that long to fix. (Wishful thinking) I can't believe I can't get a Stator!!!!!!!! I CAN'T GO ANY LONGER WITHOUT MY BIKE.. okay thanks for letting me vent.

I had my stator go bad at 10k took 4 days to get it from Harley. I paid to over night the part.
put another 2k miles on the bike then the voltage regulator went , make sure that there are no damaged wires.

I feel your pain Tatsu! Let me sing my tale of woe...

Took RMHD 3 MONTHS to fix mine. Dropped it off Oct. 5th, told them I thought the stator was bad. Oct. 9th they tell me the stator is bad. They order stator on Oct. 28th! Buell CS confirmed the part was not back ordered (as they told me on 2 occasions before they actually ordered the part)

1 MONTH AFTER DROP OFF: Bike returned with left mirror completely broken off. Tech said "it just fell off' when they put it on the lift". Shifter bolt, shaft seal and rubber grommet also missing. (I replaced parts via Dave) Charged me the $50 extended warranty deductible. Bike died within 30 miles. Towed it in again.

DROP OFF +2 MONTHS: Got the bike back again 1st week of December. They replaced the Primary chain inspection cover and Clutch cover (neither were leaking) without my permission (they felt compelled to put on updated parts) charged me $40. Replaced voltage regulator. Bike dies within 30 miles. Towed in again.

DROP OFF + 3 MONTHS: Techs didn't believe that their was still a charging system problem (like I keep draggin' this thing back to them to meet tow truck drivin' babes). Finally made them take it for a 30 mile test ride, stranded a tech in traffic. They had the voltage regulator hooked up incorrectly. Attempted to charge me $170, arguing that this was not the same problem I brought it in for. They Dyno tech (not actually involve in fixing my bike) came to my rescue and sent me happily on my way, the first week of JANUARY!

In hindsight, I should have replaced the parts myself. Between the tows and parts replaced and broken by the dealer, the cost would have been a wash, and I would have had the bike fixed in a weekend or two.

I still have 2 bikes I put a crapload of miles on to keep in rubber and oil. I have not returned to RMHD since. (I tend to hold a grudge) Their loss is Daves gain.

The XB stator is on backorder status, but there are 23 dealers across the country that supposedly have it in stock. Your dealer should be able to call one of them and have is overnighted, or at least shipped ground service. Where are you located? What year is your bike?Retail on this is $131.00, but Dave can probably shave a bit off of that for BadWebers. Hope you get back on the road soon!

Odinbueller, thanks for the info. That'a supposed to be wrong with my bike also... They are supposed to order the parts on monday, so I think I'll call them monday afternoon and see what they say. If a part is on backorder status, do they find that out as soon as the order is put in or at a later date???

Well I'm in Hawaii, but Dave has shipped things to me in 4 days. If something is on back order does that mean that they can't keep up with the demand? If so, maybe Buell should look at the quality of the Stator they are putting into the bike. This is a '04 XB12R. Are the '03 XB's having this problem. The most common connection I see, it the Stator shorts itself at about 15K to 25K. I think Al was saying that it's metal fatigue at the connection point. As I reflect back mine was actually smoking when I pulled off the inspection cover. I'm so glad that my bike didn't catch on fire. Am I'm complaining yes I am, but I am also trying to find a solution to a possible problems. For me there are two major problems I have seen with this bike: the Brakes and the Stator system. Anything else?

For me there are two major problems I have seen with this bike: the Brakes and the Stator system. Anything else?


Better trained techs @ the HD dealers.
It's bad when your know more about you bike
than the people who you are trusting to
work on it.

I think they should have to be BUELL certified
by BUELL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Norris,they are Buell certified at Buell dealers.The kind of stuff Tatsu and others are going thru is why I am going with a SV650 or FZ6,hopefully this week.

Are you joking, the tech @ my Dealer
knew nothing about timing, EFI system
or even how to get the seat off.
He also must think the plastic washers
on the air box, are optional, because they are MIA.


He said he'd been to a HD class, but not on the
Buell.

So if that's Buell certified, it needs to change,
and quick.

only way a buell dealer can sell and do warrenty work on a buell is to have a Buell PHD tech, but any HD dealer can work on Buells if willing. I have techs calling me from the other store with buell problems, its to the point where i tell them just to bring the bike to me cuz i dont fix things over the phone.

There's 2 ways for dealers to find out if a part is on backorder. Once a dealer places an order for a part, then the dealer is alerted once the motor company receives the order if the part is on backorder status. Also, they can use the H-D dealer website to look up part availability & backorder status, which dealers have it in their state, or across the entire country (as long as their inventory is correct in their dealer systems database). They can also use their dealer systems database, but the online tool is usually better organized.

I agree with you Mike, there should be more Buell educated technicians in the dealer network. There are 2 problems, though, that I've seen:

1 - Lack of online & classroom courses for Buell.
2 - Owners expending money on further education of employees that may or may not be committed to that particular dealer.

As it stands right now, there are only 2 online technical and 2 online sales courses available, and 2 classroom technical courses offered by the motor company. The online courses can be taken anytime, but the classroom courses depend on available dates, and dealer interest. My GM is pushing to find out when the next classroom courses are going to be scheduled, as he wants me to get the hands-on education the motor company offers. At this point, there are no dates in the near future for any Buell classroom courses.

Now, the reason they're sending me for sure is that I'm family (son-in-law of the owner). There have been cases of head hunting at these courses by other dealers. One student was sent to a course in Milwaukee, was approached by another dealer at the same class and made an offer. When that student received his reimbursement for expenses, he quit and went to the other dealer. This is not common place, but it has happened enough to make owners extremely cautious of whom they send to these courses. Usually, the tech just quits, not even offered a job by another dealer, but thinks they have a bargaining chip to move on to other dealers. The grass is always greener mentality kind of thing. My understanding is that this happens throughout the industry, not just with H-D or Buell. Since I’m pretty involved with the day-to-day operations of the dealership, I see this and hope that it doesn’t perpetuate. Trust me; it affects us as dealers and customers as well.

The Buell tech at the dealer I used to go to returned my bike once with no oil showing on the dipstick,this after having the bike for 2 weeks.I hate to repeat this but I am thru with Buell products,as soon as I can ,I am getting rid of my bike and I will not recommend them to anyone again.

I can't blame you for wanting to go to another bike after that kind of treatment. I only hope you don't regard the entire dealer network the same as one technician who didn't treat your bike better that they should have. I hope your next bike gives you the enjoyment you're looking for.

To lighten things up, I love my Buell.
When I saw and read about the 12R, I wanted one some kind of bad.
And I'm sure there's lots of good Buell techs around you never hear about.

Bad news travels fast.
Good news travels slow.

All the techs at my dealer are super nice and go out of their
way to help. They just don't work on a lot of Buells and
need more training or experience with Buell specific systems.

I think this problem is going to get better
when more Buells hit the streets.

In my opinion the Buell is a state of the art machine. Some of the
things that magazines talk bad about, is the very reasons I love the
bike. I love the fact that it's a familiar Harley motor,
and it shakes, rumbles and turns heads, old and young. I'm
very proud to own one.

And I can't thank Erik and his team enough for one of
the greatest bikes in history. I know countless hours
have been spent on the XBs, and I look forward to
seeing the new models.

You know what would ease the pain a little. If your payment was pro-rated the number of days your bike was out of service while under warranty. Wishful thinking but sure would be nice. I would be close to not having to make a payment this month. Cable company does it for you.

Actually the service guys are top notch at my dealership. When the bike fully broke down en-route, they sent a truck out to get me. That was cool.

That happens everywhere. Hell, I once got the idiot light about a block out of the lube n tune. They forgot to re-install the drain plug. You'll hear stories of this at every dealership and brand. Our Ford dealer burnt a car up while working on an FI system. If you like the bike, keep it and find a new dealer, or make the one you have own up to their inadequacy...

I have taken it to another dealer,I just don't know if I am willing to take a chance with the same problem happening again.Here is the story of my problems.At about 10k i had some noises coming from the trans,Buell told the dealer(or atleast thats what I was told)that it was a normal sound.At 13k the mainshaft and bearing was replaced under warranty.At 18k a noise from the primary started,took it to the dealer,they said the comp nut on the crank had came loose and the primary chain was to tight.I told them they were the last one in there and i got the old shrug of the shoulders.now at 24k transmission needs repaired again.So at 13k and 24k the tranny has had bad problems,seems like a pattern.I think this is a continuation of an existing problem,do you think the factory will step up,I can give you that answer,NO.The first person I talked to at Buell customer service was not very helpful,the second person was great.talking to CS I was told that the tech who worked on my bike said he felt the bike was not being serviced correctly,this from a guy who didn't put enough oil in the bike after on repair and everytime I got the bike back when he worked on it bolts were missing or stripped.Do you think this tech asked me about service I perform,no,he just knew I didn't bring it in there to get raped for a $200 oil change.I am done ranting,but I still think there is a problem with my bike thats causing the tranny to have problems.

Chainsaw, I recommend that you write a letter to the owner of the dealership outlining exactly what happened like you did above and let him know that the level of service that you received is unacceptable and that you will not be back and that you will tell everyone that you know including on the internet exactly the kind of service that you received. If he extends a olive branch then give them another chance, if not take your business elsewhere. That lack of service is in my experience unacceptable. Ask Dave. If he is a good business man he will do something to make it right, if not, then he does not need your business. It is that simple.

I had the strator fail on my 1998 S1W at 25k miles. Rather than wait for one to come in, I went to a Chopper shop and bought one off the shelf for a sporster. Same part, since it did not have HD stamped on it, it was 50% less. ; )

I called the dealer that's got my bike monday morning and mentioned that the stators might be on back order and he said,'Oh, it's usually a day or two until we find out that', so I'm going to call tomorrow which is when the parts are supposed to come in and see what's up... And of course we've been having bad weather, 60's in the morning and 80's in the afternoon... Grrrrrrrrrrrr

well, i have ordered a stator to have as spare.
i have the following spares on hand: one each, voltage regulator,clutch cable, brake lever, clutch lever, pair of fork seals, front brake pads, 6 oil filters, one air filter, a rear metzeler, and hope to add a stator and a drive chain and sprockets. still waiting for buell to produce and market some BETTER QUALITY SPARK PLUG WIRES, like the 11 dollar screamin eagle wires that fit the sportsters and work very well in heavy rain.

oh forgot to mention that i USED to have a spare left footpeg, but i broke it again. have now ordered up 3 footpegs. should just buy an even dozen, and get a quantity discount, but i dont want to stock up too much on the inferior quality part, just in case Buell is forced to upgrade the defective footpeg, then i would be stuck with a bunch of obsolete old crap. they are very poorly CAST in taiwan. a forging would be SO much more durable.

Nope closing in on the one month period this Sat. All my friends out riding. Wife taking the bus. Me sitting in the SUV watching people ride. Wrote the GM of Cycle City.. no response.... called Customer Service and after being on hold for 15 minutes the gal told me she would look into it, no call back. Called the dealer again this morning..... stator showing back order. Now this is just crazy.
