My dad had an accident on his BMW last Sunday morning here in Houston. He was riding with the BMW club when a 130 lbs dog ran in front of him. He hit the dog going about 50+ mph because he couldn't avoid it - it ran out from behind a parked vehicle to chase another dog on the opposite side of the road. Dad went down and slid about 40', the Beemer went about 100' into a ditch and is most likely totaled. The dealer says it's about $7 grand in damage. The stupid dog is toast and the dumba$$ hill billy owner received a ticket from DPS and will now have the insurance company on his butt. However, pops was wearing a full face helmet, Joe Rocket jacket, boots, gloves and got up right away with only minor road rash on his forearm. He's 65 years old! If he wasn't wearing his gear, he'd be in bad shape. WEAR YOUR GEAR! Some things cannot be avoided and I cringe whenever I see the Harley boys with their cut-offs and skid lids... |

I learned when I slid my Honda Shadow down going around 35mph with only a T-shirt on. It sucked having to clean and take care of my road rash for a couple of months. Needless to say I went out and bought a leather riding jacket shortly after the fall. I'm looking into some summer gear now and was wondering what other thought of some of the fabric gear available? I've been looking at the Icon Team Merc jackets. |

Gear is the smartest & wisest investment a rider can make. I really like Joe Rocket gear. I have a Revolution jacket & boots and ballistic 5.0 pants. I don't always wear the pants when it's warm, sometimes it's just jeans but always the jacket & boots. I prefer the light weight of the textile gear over the bulk of leather. When I can afford it I gotta replace my full face. It's Dot approved but not Snell. & maybe some alter ego pants or draggin jeans. I'm glad your Dad's allright. I feel bad for the dog. It's a shame it's owner wasn't responsible enough to keep the poor fella off the streets. |

Thanks for the good wishes all. I think pops is looking for a new bike, he wants to tour Argentina and Chile next year so he's not about to slow down. Regarding gear, I wear First Gear's Meshtex jacket which breathes very well in the warm weather. I have matching pants, but only wear these on all day rides. Being a dog owner (85 lbs GSD) I feel bad for the dog involved, but consider that it could have been child! Irresponsible people are everywhere!! |

I tell ya... whenever I look at pictures of somebody who went down wearing jeans and a proper riding jacket, I seem to notice that if they slide feet-first, the jacket goes up to their armpits and they get rid of their love handles the hard way. I'm reluctant to ride without a jacket that zips to my pants. |

Hey Jan, got those pants, I like 'em, but I wish I'd tried them on and sat on the bike first. The XB*R riding position pulls them up to where they don't cover my boots. -NadZ |

Joe Rocket jacket, (winter) EVS ballistic jersey, (summer) Draggin jeans, (year round) Work Force-Swat side-entry boots, (year round) First Gear carbon fiber reinforced gloves (year round). I Don't get the squids that I see day in and day out wearing bermuda shorts and wife-beaters whipping in and out of traffic. I haven't been down on anything other than a dirt bike, but I know pavement is far less forgiving than dirt. |

Too many tards ride sporties around there without anything but their ditch digging best on. Glad your pops was ok - wear all of your gear all of the time is the rule I was brought up with. |

Here's a good example of what you would look like if you do not wear your gear, Do not worry it is not very gross http://www.gsxr.com/showthread.php?t=3677 |

I went down once on tarmac on a Honda 50 with no gloves, I spent two days picking the gravel out of my palms...never again. It always amazes me in the summer when I see riders I would classify as serious ie full leathers ,boots etc ...but riding without gloves ! |

I get looks and smerks from harley guys in the summer when they ride past me in 90+ degree days when i am in black leather jacket, Jeans, helmet, leather gloves, and my Alpine Star boots... and they are in shorts, t-shirt (with a leather vest OH HOLD ME BACK), and a skull topper... i just say to myself.. Keep your eyes on the road dude, and i will be fine...lol |

Well... there was a warning. I've seen those before and they still awe me. I know they're gross and nasty but I think all first time riders should see these just to scare some common sense in em. Hey 12R, maybe you should edit your warning and add "DO NOT VIEW ON FULL STOMACH" |

Wow...Reality Check. Last year I posted against them as they were posted as pics, not links, and were blatantly in your face and anyone around you at the time. Is a great way to get your Sig O, kids, employer or whomever to lobby against your hobby. I am much more comfortable with the pics being posted as a link this year. Like I said, it's a significant reality check for riders of all levels levels of expertise and is applicable regardless of what they ride. One of the observations I made this year was the second series of pics. Looked like they were in full gear. Therefore, I feel it is safe to assume it is not just what you wear but also your mental state of mind and how you ride. Aggressive, Defensive, Reckless or any number adjectives apply in varying degrees of Risk Management. Ride Well, Ride Safe and live to share your happy experiences. |
