last oil change i had syn3 put in. Can i change to something else? or is that a bad idea?

PERSONAL PREFERENCE. TRY WHAT YOU WANT. IT'S NOT GOING TO HURT ANYTHING. ALTHOUGH ONCE I PICK I USUALLY STICK WITH THAT BRAND.

yes you actually can use any motor oil that you want to. you may wish to stick with the grade re-ferenced in the owners manual which is 20w-50, but many of us have also used 15w-50 without any lubrication induced failures. i really think you would be hard pressed to find a brand of motor oil that was incapable of working in your engine.

I would stick with a quality Syn, Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil, etc.

If I understand the numbering scheme correctly, once the oil gets warm, they should both be the same viscosity. Am I right?

In theory you are correct. However, there are some variations on how well an oil will hold its viscosity over time. The viscosity index will tell you that.

For example, Mobil 1 20-50 has a higher viscosity index than the 15-50. Both are pretty good oils and certainly the 15-50 seems to work quite well.

At nearly double the price, you have to wonder if the Twin oil is worth the go. Moreover, since I change my oil at 2500 miles, the VI of the 15-50 seems fine to me.

The other issue you can look at is Flash Point, which is another indicator of how well the oil will hold up under extreme heat situations.
