Ok, I have broken in several new bikes and from my experience it doesn't seem to matter if you follow the guidelines or not. I've heard it all when it comes to this subject but I have no experience with American V twin engines. I wanted to see what your thoughts were on this. Don't worry about it or what? I'm getting tired of getting passed by cars for the moment.

I followed the guidelines all the way, but I pushed right up against the line, gradually increasing how quickly I twisted the throttle. Mine runs really well now. I did it over one weekend and by commuting for two weeks, on and off.

If you're worried about reliability and warranty, follow your manual.

Otherwise, do what you feel is best.

RPM, did you do 1000 miles of break in? I did about 500 on my XB12S and took it "kinda easy" for the next 500. I'm finding I don't have that much patience on my wifes XB9R...

I go by the book so there are no fubars if needing warranty service. After that, well....it is a spirited bike.

I followed the manual exactly. My xb9s now has about 10,000 miles.
It runs great,
idles great,
never leaked a drop of oil,
never burns a drop of oil,
never had a single problem...

Just follow what the manuel says. When you hit 500 miles, peg the beast.

Sorta - the first 50 & 500, absolutely. The next 500, I gradually increased the time spent at higher RPMs and decreased the amount of time between bursts. Now, I hammer it when I wanna hear the D&D roar.

Which is, pretty much, all the time. 1700 miles and counting!

broke mine in over 1000 miles (stock, i brake all my bikes in in a stock configutration). the frst 100 miles kept it pretty easy with forays to about 4000 rpm for brief intervals with mild excelleration from dead stops. Next 400mi's a little more aggressive excellerations while staying at around 4500 to 5000 rpm with runs upto 5500 rpm. Last 500mi's much more aggressive in all aspects of riding trying to stay between 5500 rpm and 6000 rpm with occasional runs to red line. @ 1000 miles went into to do mods, bike tested at 94 hp to the rear wheel stock and as of today not a drop of oil has dropped (makes my friends wonder if that really is a derivitive of a Harley motor, lol)after 1975 miles.

I agree with cataract2 anything over 500 is probably overkill. I also know plenty of people who have rode 100 mile then ride it like they stole it!!

I agree it is pretty lame doing the break in. After 300 miles, I got tired of it and just spent an entire day completing it. Mine doesn't leak any oil either.

I'd say don't bog it and dont slam it off the rev limiter for a few hundred, that should do it. Give it your first oil change in 50 miles or less, and maybe a second one even in a couple hundred. An old jet mechanic- long time biker taught me the oil change trick, he's got a 99 R1 with over 275,000 miles on it, no rebuild- all he's done is timing chain and an alternator! True story. As an old ex drag racer, we use to break our motors in real briskly after an easy 20 minutes for cam break- in, and that was best for power and sealing of race motors. Don't bog it!

I, however, have broke-in all my bikes per the manufacturer's recommendations.
