dont laugh to hard but how do youll cope with the wind above 75 mph on the lightning | ||

Have done 1015 miles in 22 hours on an XB12S. the wind was not bothersome at all, the trick is to work up to it. do a few hours of yoga each week, do long sets of wide grip pull-ups. maybe 100 or 150 pullups per week. start riding more, start with short 150 or 200 mile rides after work, work your way up to 400-500 mile rides on saturdays, and then when you get more comfortable with the bike, and can find ways of changing your seating/riding positon even small changes in muscle tension, or a slight twist in the upper body cangive the muscles a break or rest. after a while riding will just seem natural. a 75 or 80 mph breeze is just about right to counteract the forward lean angle. i feel about neutral between 60 and 80 mph. going to try a 3000 mile weekend at the end of may. plan to run down to Hyder, AK. there is a big gang of LD riders converging there from all over the continent. many will have just been through all of the 48 contiguous states in the preceding 6 days. Alaska will complete their 7 day tour through 49 states. | ||

Reepicheep I feel that 85 is the optimal cruising speed for me on my lightning. I am also one of the few that rides without a helmet, and the wind is nothing on the lightning. I don't know I'm the kind of person that besides my son the best thing in life is having the wind in my face and believe me the lightning puts the wind on your face. Glasses are all you need, except in the city, a helmet is safer. | ||

Sorry, didn't work. Check out my profile pic or search subject line for "brainstorm" w/in last 30 days. I didn't find the wind to be a problem until triple digit speeds or sub 40 degrees or both. | ||

I agree with fullpower. It's all about endurance & conditioning. Back in 1994 when I was 24, I road from the Bay area CA to Lewiston ID on a 92' Kawisaki Zephyr 750. It had a seating position about the same as the S but even less wind protection and I made it the whole way (just a little under 1000 miles)with only gas & restroom stops without any problems. Now I'm 10 years older and in not as good of shape so if I was to do it now I'd spend about 2 or 3 months working on my stamina first. | ||

Take the bike out on a long stretch of highway, and get her up to about 120mph for a good 5 minutes straight. Then 75 feels like a soft breeze. | ||

Or one of those major league bugs that hits my facemask so hard, I think I am going down. Not trying to start a fight but has this happened to you? If not, what happens when? | ||

I like the wind in my face too. Its does get old having to turn a wash cloth black after a day of riding, sand from trucks, ex. Also 1000 miles in 22 hours is pretty slow. | ||

geez are you guys hard of hearing? you think nothing of tearing half your bike apart, to paint,dye polish the frame or whatever...but no one wants to extend there flyscreen?.....they would ratherspend 250.00... or spend about 50 bucks and make one? trust me i am not a fabricater...and it was real easy...i'll be at daytona if anyone wants to check mine out....hooters on wed. i believe? mike | ||

@85 MPH hard shelled bugs will make your eyes water from the pain. @85 MPH rocks will tear skin off of your forehead and give you a good old fashioned black eye -- sometimes both eyes. The most painful, non-wreck event, I've experienced is a very hard unidentified object that blasted my right knee running down I-40 about 70 MPH or so -- that freaking hurt big time. All time worse timing to be wearing a brain-bucket was this last September. Me and my son were riding to The Gap and we got behind a livestock trailer. He swung around a bend in the interstate and gallons, upon gallons, of cow waste was plastered all over both of us. I was wearing a brain bucket/novelty helmet and that one event ruined my taste buds for days  That's a true story too. | ||

Could be the extra pounds I've added over the years, but when I reach highway speeds, the force of the wind is just about right to take enough weight off my wrists to make doing distance comfortable. (Don't ya love run-on sentences?) It seems to counteract the natural, forward-leaning posture perfectly. (I'm also on an XB12S.) | ||

bad s1 daytona is gonna be fun i can't wait..be nice to meet some badwebbers too. bama i made the screen out of fiberglass,used the original for a mold covered it with wax paper so i wouldn't damage it...then i used some aluminum foil to shape in the extended part..then put on 2 layers of cloth and resin,then i added a third layer to help with the transition from the extention....and thats pretty much it.....it's far from perfect to me at least...but it works great and i like the looks of it. i put the stock one on it the other day and i was like damn that looks funny | ||

Has anyone tried installing a second flyscreen over the first and slotted the mounting holes so it could be easily adjusted up or down |
