I keep hearing of airbox mods. Which ones do what and will fit my 12S? I've tried searching the site and found only the F. A. S. T. Any opinions on it? Where to get it? How much? I'm so confussed  (Message edited by wheelsleaning on January 19, 2005) | ||

LOL... And there are about six different versions of the F.A.S.T. system  . I can't remember which one of the sponsors carries the fast system... It might be Trojan-Horse. As far as an "airbox mod", search more. You'll find good info on the different ways of chopping up the upper airbox (not the cover (although some have done that too... )). Standard mods are - Drill/Dremel/rotozip/delete the upper airbox (make sure if you delete it, that you still seal the filter. Pull the snorkel, not the velocity stack, the snorkel that runs through the left side of the frame. Use heat shielding material to make a new lower airbox. Some people cut holes of various sizes/shapes in the airbox cover and then add a metal screen (looks quite nice). As far as the F.A.S.T. system... As I recall the fast system got about six HP on a nine in the now famous V-Stack challenge. A very nice gain for the money and certainly worth it. | ||

Keith. That is what yawl call the "airbox mod"? Any thoughts on if I were to cut a large hole in front with a tube for ram air, and block off the factory intake? Would think at speed it would produce a slight pressure depending on the ratio of ram air area to air volume required at RPM... | ||

It shouldn't, but as always, check with your dealer first. It's pretty much their decision whether to void it or not. | ||

Depends. If you are a jerk, and/or your dealer is a jerk, and something bad happens, the dealer can use the cut airbox to invalidate the warranty. That being said, if you leave the airbox stock, they can use any number of other things to invalidate the warranty if sufficiently motivated. If you go to court (the legal thing, not the person) and spend 3x what it would have cost you in money and 12x what it would have cost you in time, you would have a better chance of winning without a modified airbox. You, in that case, would be a victorious fool. And replacement airboxes are $35. Keep an intact one on the shelf. I cut mine and went to my dealer and got a dyno run that includes an air fuel plot, and asked them if they see anything dangerous to the bike in that plot. They didn't. But it is still up to the dealer to support me or not if a warranty claim arises, I picked a dealer that I believed would be reasonable, and don't think the state of my airbox will be a large factor in their decision making process. That being said, I also paid full retail and fair setup fees for my bike, and did not make a stink when they made a few honest mistakes. But yes, technically, it invalidates your warranty. And lets this keep things in perspective here. Do the XB's run noticebly better with the cut airbox? Yes. Is it necessary for the airbox to be cut to have a wonderful motorcycle? No, every XB, bone stock, is a great bike. Pick your level of risk and draw the line. I was comfortable with race ECM, race filter, cut airbox, pulled snorkel, and 3rd party exhaust mods. I was not comfortable adding the techlusion device, but that is just where I drew my line. I feel like it would be hard to argue a cut up air filter or race can caused a lean condition that dropped a valve. I can't say the same for the techlusion, I think the device is safe and solid, but would have a hard time telling my dealer that it can't have caused an intermittent lean condition due to an intermittent failure or something. | ||

I have the race kit already installed,the tps reset and a few hundred miles on after I did those mods. If I drill the holes now, will I have to have the tps reset again? or just ride a 3 grand for a while? g u s | ||

no reset needed,just a short ride for the ecm to relearn its values,around 3500rpm for about ten mins i believe | ||

Havent ridin in the rain but from what I hear there really should not be any problems. I put the grills inside cause I thought it Looked good. and yes I did remove the snorkel anyway cause i have the race kit on my 9 | ||

Hey Biofilter, Have you considered using this instead of the grille: Have had a though for the use the "Cheese Grater". As this is perforated metal, why not make an intake in the top of your Airbox, use this to cover it (attach from the inside).. "single side air intake" would finish the job nicely, as it's already pre-formed. Or if your really R&D minded, locate some rubber seal strip, slip one side around the inside of the cutout the other side holds the removed "Cheese Grater", this would give a nice professional/finish. Fix down with some rubber sealant. Food for thought for all those unwanted "Cheese Graters". Cheers.. | ||

If you have a 12 the foam itself will hold down your air cleaner, no problem. It's work for me 4000 miles later no problems! Art | ||

I used 4inch long 10-24 threaded rod. and some lock nuts and rubber and metal washers. All the metal hardware is stainless steel and the top nuts are wing nuts so I can easily remove the airfilter by hand. then all I had todo was cut the rods to the proper length | ||
