AlDaytona -

I've got a 12R with the snorkel removed, drilled airbox and a K&N. It sounds a good deal meaner and makes more power. I don't think I lost power anywhere. Do it : ).

I will soon do mostly what Odie did, but I'll leave more of the upper airbox intact. I'll leave about 3/4" to 1" straps that go to the clips, and I'll leave most of the material on the backside of the inner airbox.. Other than that, I'll be doing the same thing that Odie did.

Al, no matter if you use the K&N or the stock air filter, you will still get better throttle response with the holes in the air box, or even better the lid sacrificed to achieve total air box elimination. This has more to do with the INCREASED EFFECTIVE SIZE of the new air box cavity. Sure there is added air flow by removing the snorkel, and there is even a little more air flow between the chassis and the dummy cover, but you are also changing the size and shape of the air box.

Some would argue that it's not sealed so it's not a true air box, but the theory is still there, even if there are holes in it (pun intended).

I just tried drilling out the 12 airbox last night and rode it today...I have noticed a bit of performance improvement down low and on the freeway...the midrange is a little better and not quite as noticable. This is mostly stock except for K&N filter and a few holes in the exhaust can for better breathing.

Keep in mind you WILL get induction noise once the seal on the airbox is gone (holes or cut up)....this can be fairly loud and causes the airbox cover (what you see) to rattle a bit which I kind of like anyways...
