Mine broke at 8888 miles. This seems very early as the cable was lubed twice around 3k and again a 5k miles. It also seems odd that it broke clean, like it was cut, right where it goes into the barrel that connects to the lever. |

I had one break around 7K at the same spot. Mine was caused by the cable going into the clutch handle at an angle due to aftermarket handlebars. I actually don't recall ever lubing it at all. |

Well I just melted mine at 7224 miles. No, not because I was using the clutch so rapidly! The wire clamp that holds it away from the header broke. (if you wonder why I didn't smell it sooner, I was moving kind of rapidly at the time ) Oh yeah, and to head off the "Buells suck" brigade, this is my first problem after over 7000 miles of hard riding. |

Buells rock, this is my third. Over 30k miles on Buells and few problems. But, I think the clutch cable may be prone to breaking in that place. |

I'm just over 8000 miles on my XB12R, sounds like I'd better get one in stock! Are you guys replacing it with a OEM piece or is there a better aftermarket alternative? |

I went 15k before mine broke. Not a clean break like yours though. I've looked around for an alternative but haven't found one so it looks like the OE cable is the only choice so far. ( though you might consider contacting a shop that custom builds cables to see what they can do.) |

Ok, color me stupid, but how do you safely stop your bike when your clutch cable breaks? |

MidKnyte, safely is all a matter of opinion at that point. Fortunately, these things are much easier to get into neutral, even without the clutch, then the tubbers were. Just got to be aware and plan ahead for stops!! Bruce |

that little switch by your right thumb works well as a last resort, though maybe a little violent and detrimental to your ego. |

actually that IS the easiest way to find neutral, and i usually coast to a stop while parking after bumping into neutral at idle speed in first gear. also have a spare clutch cable on the wall. |

Mine did break at 25somethingthousand miles. I thought it might be the lower bars I have on. Two inches lower than stock, but not short enough for the R cable. I've had the bars on now for around 20somethingthousand miles. Believe it or not she still got me home.

just wondering how all you people clean your bikes?although in glitch's picture there is no sign of water damage, my farther use to always clean his bike with soap and water.he never really dried it off that well.the clutch cable on his bike would always brake at the same point every time it would break.to this day he still thinks it is some kind of scam the cable companies have going. (for what it's worth, just a suggestion) |

Barnett will custom make cables for ya, if you'd like . . . . . I've got one of their SS braided units on my tuber, and it's held up great for 20K or so |

Funny, when mine broke I ordered one from SMHD/Buell and Daves to make sure I had one for Runnin' the Ridge. So now I have a spare. Imagine that, with my clutch cable I have a more complete parts inventory than some dealerships! |

My cable broke just like yours Glitch. I think maybe the plastic cover on the barrel does not allow the cable to rotate as smoothly as other bike clutch cables do and that the resulting side load type stress causes them to fail. Daves - do you have another clutch cable in stock? I managed to break mine when I threaded it into the primary cover. |

It seems they are all breaking right at the barrel by the lever. Every cable I've ever had break, breaks there. Some break sooner than others? I don't know why. Dave |

Lube the ball and check for burrs in the handle pocket, might need to curve/trim/contour the pocket slot some as well. See how in the pic above the leading/cable end of the ball/knob/thingie cover looks all gnarly and such, looks like it's been digging in to the mating surface of the handle pocket. Check the surface finish of the handles and see how well they are smoothed up. Used to get that problem on dirt bikes and bicycles until I figured out to squirt some lube on the ball whenever I lubed the cables. Just a thought. |

Anthony from Appleton had one break on a group ride. We were able to get a throttle clap from the friendly neighborhood hardware store. |
