I want to take off my belt guard but I was told that would be dangerous. I was told that rocks and other foreign objects could get caught in the belt and come up and hit me. The xb9 looks better without the belt guard.

I have had mine off for 3 months with no problems, however there is always the possibility.

it's better to be safe than sorry I'll just leave at that and plus the belt cost 150-160 so it's up to you if you want to pay for something unnecessary.

I just installed a new belt due to a rock punching a hole thru it, and I had the belt guard on. As far as looks Buell offers a polished aluminum guard that looks great.

I ride without the belt guard because it looks better and I don't think the guard is necessary. As Honu said, the belt can get damaged with or without it. I think that the belt guard ('03 design) may actually catch pebbles or other debris and guide them into where they can do damage. If my belt breaks, it breaks. I'm not going to sweat it.
Mike.

I took the top guard off and left the lower one on. The lower one is where the stones could get sucked in between the belt and sprocket. The upper one is more of a pant-leg, shoe guard for passenger. Been riding a couple of months like this (dirt roads too) w/o problem.

I know what spark knock sounds like in my car (WRX-STi) when I use low octane fuel. Can't say as I've heard it on my 12R. What I do here is lifter/rocker rattle though. I wonder if some people are confusing the two? Just a thought...

yeah, i had removed my upper belt guard on day two of XB12 ownership. thought it looked better without. had absolutely no problem for 6700 miles. at that point i developed a problem: one each broken drive belt part number G0500.1AAA.
i initially did not think the butt ugly upper belt guard would be keeping anything off the belt, but on further inspection/reflection, it seems that it may well deflect some gravel falling off the upper surface of the rear tire from wedging down between the belt and pulleys.
