I was told this past weekend at the Waterloo H-D Battletrax event by Craig, that they are pulling all of that off the bike, and returning it to fuel injection. it will still have the 1050cc kit and heads but they are going to try and make something work using Duga's Black box.....From what I understand they had some problems getting the mixture right for all RPM's?????? not sure.

for what it's worth...and hoping I'm not pissing in someone's cheerios.

Dave?

Sam, When is your bike going to be ready?

Cheerios are covered up and staying dry. I am still enthusiastic about the downdraft carbureted XB idea. I think it can be done right.
More horsepower can be made through a single barrel weber than the Buell crankpin can stand, and I am quite certain that I can get a smoother idle, better off idle transition, and a far better part throttle cruise than any stock EFI motorcycle on the market. ( But I still want to see someone else do the hard stuff first.)

I haven't seen the bike in 4 1/2 months. I'm riding a XB12R now at my new dealership in Appleton Wi.
Craig would know more about it than me.
It didn't run right when I left and it doesn't sound like they got it to work.
It was a great idea though.

Fullpower, I'm starting to lean in the direction that a well-mapped EFI (and ignition) running permanently in open loop and using a MAP sensor as well would be the bees knees. A visual indicator running off the O2 sensor could alert the owner to any mixture problems if they happened. Also the XB has all the EFI components fitted except MAP.
Unfortunately I'm not an EFI expert though, and a little knowledge can be dangerous.

To clarify, I fully agree with the advantages you state for the carb, but feel the EFI runs rougher in these areas because it's in closed loop. Notice how smooth these XB motors run when you're on the gas (in open loop).

Gentlemen,

There is a DIY fuel injection system out there that will handle and of your needs.

It is called MegaSquirt:

megasquirt... roger that. another system that seems to be working well for air cooled twins is the one on wifes Ducati M620. very smooth, consistent, and it seems to be 100% open loop. as it has no oxygen sensor. sure would be cool to have one about the size of a pack of cigarettes, and with one each black and grey connector to fit on the XB.

If I remember right....from back when I was looking into it, there's a lot of testimonials from people who have assembled the board, installed it in whatever and actually got it to start......and only have the fine tuning left to do.

Which is where I expect they were when they started.....

my supposition was that it would take an eternity to fine tune (dyno time or driving around with your laptop) doing who knows what kind of damage in the process.....

anyone tried it?

How can it adjust itself if there's no O2 sensor input?

I've got one half built, put on hold due to lack of time, need to get going and finish it. M1 it does have on O2 input but I won't be using it. One thing/main thing I'm concerned about is the "old" megasquirt (which I'm building) is batch and not sequential injection. Not sure if this will be an issue or not.

For those who want to know about Mega squirt issues

Shazam was concered with damage while riding on it prior to fine tuning, if done properly, this is impossible. The base line maps are all so fat, you are down on power because of too much fuel! The fine tuning comes in with data logging on rides, then inputing that data thru a filtering program, and then feeding it back to the ecm to update the map in small increments.

You can only ruin or burn up a motor not being patient and forcing over-corrections to the maps. the advantages in my opinion, are when done, say a few hundred mile of logs on the road and maybe dyno too, it will be taylored to your specific aqpplication, not what a PC3 says is right, or should be about right!!

BUT, be warned, this not a plug and go system. You will have to build it, input senor parameters, TPS numbers, all kinds of things. It is a tinkerer's system, not a jonny rocket part. But if my brother and I could put it on his 84 Jetta, and make it run on the first crank, I think most can do it. He even piggy backed it on over the old system, to record data for baseline comparisons, it was very cool!!

Just something to chew on.

I look like a newbie, but some people take good care of their books, so be careful how you judge!! lol
