Hmmm...2000 XI, premium gas, no ping regardless of temps or load. Must be either the set up or I got the proverbial lemon.

BadS1, well I would guess your paying about 20 cents a gallon more for the first few ounces of 87 octane. The quantity is right, you loose out on quality if you follow an 87 octane purchaser.

As for the manager going through all the trouble, I've known the guy for 25 years, and my business has an account w/ this station, we buy all our gas there. Also, just another aspect of livin in a small town....

If the fuel is in the hoses.(lines)it would be more then just ounces in 7 ft. of hose.If you want to throw out the...I've known this guy for 25 years and I have a biz account for my trucks...those pumps must be screwing you small town folk over.My brother stations aren't like that set up at all.I've been in them three times and I'll see if hes doing them anytime soon again so I can be there.

By my calculation a 7' 1" ID hose would be ~.3 gallons.

.3 gallons, so a little over three cans of beer worth? my math right? seems about right for the hose, but sounds like more cheap gas than im ready to put in.

I too believe it is too much. I'm just happy that with the information I got from you guys, I was able to look into a possible cause of my engine rockers knocking in the high 3 to low 4 grand range. It seems reasonable that this may be the culprit. I mean the last two times I got fuel , it was to top off, maybe a gallon or more.... that could turn out to be 30% 87 octane, ea. time! I never noticed a ping prior. At least now, I am aware of this fuel deal, and will be sure to fill up at a multi hose station ( on the bike anyhow) or ( as someone previously suggested ) offer to fill a buddies first. At least for the next tank, I am gonna run well into the reserve, fill up on a quality 93, and see if this does or does not cure the problem.

Just FYI, I ran out of fuel on a 12R at 29.8 miles of my reserve tank. Most of that was riding around town in second and third gear though.

FWIW...I through octane booster into my tank when I run across the 4000RPM dead spot(XB9S W/Race ECM/PIPE and K&N).... seems to cure it...

If an XB/Sportster motor is going to ping it will be in summer on the hottest days. Try to run the best fuel at these times.

i have tried some 87 octane a few times in my XB12, it doesnt seem to mind. they actually recommend 87 for the wifes ducati M620, and it has more compression then the buell.

Bad news... IT Still does it!. Only now seems to be getting worse. I didn't get it at all yesterday, ridin solo. Today, out with ridin 2 up, as soon as I went to accelerate through 3k it was pingin big time. Iran the fuel out from previous, filled up on high test from an exxon station, (3 hose Pump). Is there a mechanical adjustment necessary? Bike has 2600 miles, oil presently in crank case (Castrol Diesel rated 15 40 )has just over 750 miles. I purchased some Mobil one v-twin 20 -50 and was gonna change it Monday. Think it will help?

It just might... I've got Castrol Syntec in mine and I rode 2 up with a friend on his way to buy his Blast, it definitely ran hotter. Maybe that's the issue is just plain old heat. I wouldn't think so, but maybe you have a hot spot on a spark plug?

Mobil 1 will make it run cooler for longer. I used to get the fan one high when cruising at 120km (75mph) but since the change the fan hasn't kicked in riding and very rarely when I get shut it down. Mind you it is winter here but daytime temps are usually 20 C.

Hunter17, have you had the ignition timing checked by the dealer? they don't seem to check it before delivery and some bikes come advanced from the factory - mine did.
