I was looking over the maintenance schedule for my XB9R and it has a pretty short mileage for changing out the fork oil...seems kind of excessive to me.

I have ridden most of my bikes and have changed this something like once every 4 years or so with no problems. I understand changing it helps keep the forks smooth but even after getting the fluids changed I couldn't tell a huge difference on past bikes.

Is there a good reason why this must be changed so often?

Matt -

Marcus McBain who does quite a bit of suspension work here in Texas has reccomendation of every 10-12 hours of usage.
Im not sure what the Owners Manual states, but I think it should be changed out often.

After attending a workshop Marcus did on suspensions and the dynamics of how it all works, it makes perfect sense to me to change it often.

You may want to check out his website to see if he has more info on the topic.

10-12 hours?

crap that is awful lot!

I understand for optimal performance it is required but as far as potentially damaging the components it doesn't seem like it needs to be that often.

Wow.

I changed the outer fork oil, known as the oil bath, on my CRF450 (Shawa also) at 20 hours and noticed a huge diff. Did it again 20 hours later but included the damper oil also and it was a negligible diff. MX bikes are way harder on fork oil that street.

I would say the initial change (say a few months of use) is important and then your schedule could be relaxed to say an annual thing unless you are Kenny Roberts and pound the corners constantly and need that last ounce of performance.
