BUELL DEALER TEAMS FASTER AT ROAD AMERICA FORMULA XTREME Strong Runs by Hal’s and Kosco Riders Rev Up Hometown Crowd ELKHART LAKE, Wis. -- (Saturday, June 05, 2004) The Hal’s Buell and Kosco Buell dealer teams ran strong in front of a partisan crowd of Buell fans during the Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme race during the AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship Series at Road America. Hal’s rider Mike Ciccotto qualified eighth and ran as high as fifth, in a five-rider dog fight battling for the final podium spot before dropping back to seventh halfway through the race when the experimental front brake on his bike lost performance. Kosco’s Michael Barnes qualified ninth but suffered similar trouble on the first lap with the experimental front brake on his bike and battled through the race to come home in 11th position. “We’re really proud of these dealers teams and what they’ve accomplished in such a competitive class. This is exactly the kind of grueling testing and learning that goes on in racing that you just can’t duplicate in the real world,” said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “We were doing great in the first half of the race,” said Ciccotto. “I’m feeling really confident on the Hal’s Firebolt, and at one point I was able to make an awesome pass of [HMC Ducati Milwaukee rider] Doug Chandler. I was right there in the fight for third.” “It’s frustrating,” said Barnes. “But even with our problems, we were just outside the top ten. This Kosco bike has a lot of potential.” AMA Formula Xtreme is a class open to highly-modified motorcycles with 600cc four-cylinder engines or larger-displacement V-Twin engines. The next stop on the AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship schedule is June 25-27 at the Brainerd International Raceway near Brainerd, Minn. To learn more about Buell Motorcycles, visit your local Buell dealer today and experience the pure streetfighter attitude, style, and performance only found on board a Buell. The "experimental" front Brake: Thanks to the guys at Hal's/Kosco for welcoming the BRAG crowd into their pit areas to get a good look at the bikes and to Mike and Michael for the autograph session during the lunch break. The coolest part about the race was when Mike Ciccotto wheelied in front of us after he saw us waving him on on the Parade and cool down laps, not to mention the awesome save he had right in front of us at turn eight on the seventh lap. He began to slide it looked like he was going down but he somehow kept it going. The stands went from an audible gasp, to silence, then a loud cheer followed by lots of laughter and applause, a priceless moment. Good job by both riders on a really tough track for Buells due to it's length. edited by josé_quiñones on June 07, 2004 |

8 pistons ... *and* some serious "bridging" to keep it from flexing/spreading. That could be some interesting trickle-down technology. Thanks for the pics and report Josè. Henrik |

The FX plot Thickens.... from superbikeplanet.com
quote:The tech inspection arm of the AMA went home with some competitors' parts after Road America on Sunday night for further technical review. The paddock was drowning in competitor complaints all weekend; in some cases the AMA took action, and in others dispelled current rumor. The sanctioning body did take several Honda FX swingarms back to Ohio for further review after complaints surfaced that the items in question did not adhere to the rules of the class. They also requested several camshafts from different factory Hondas after the race, and parked an AMA referee near each bike while the team pulled each engine apart. There were rumors and complaints all weekend that Honda were running front wheel speed sensors on their FX bikes. AMA roadrace manager Ron Barrick said he walked over and looked at the bikes and also conferred with his tech inspection crew, and they did not see any of the illicit sensors. Several other bikes were still undergoing post-race tech inspection after the weekend ended.
The guys from Kosco had mentioned this to us in the pits as we talked, but they were worried that the AMA would come after the Buells too due to the noise (they are considerably above the 105 db noise limit in the rulebook) so they did not want to rat out the Honda's.

I guess a front wheel speed sensor could be used to determine onset of wheelspin and via ECM modulate power for better drive off the corners? I very much doubt that HRC needs to cheat to whoop up on a bunch of privateers and dealer sponsored teams. Especially not with Miguel and Jake on the bikes. If they are found to be in violation of the engine modification rules, that would really be disappointing. About that noise limit... SHUSH! edited by blake on June 09, 2004 |
