I have a strange issue with my 2006 ulysses. as I am cruising at 3-4k rpm, every once in a while my battery voltage will drop down to 12.2-12.4 for a few seconds, the lights will dim and I lose power. It then returns to normal. This only seems to happen at 3-4k rpm after it reaches temperature, not at idle or above 4000 rpm. I have replaced the voltage regulator and the battery. I did the test on the stator and it seemed to be within the manuals' spec. it is sometimes a single instance and sometimes it happens a number of times in a row. I'm at my wit's end with this issue. I have also checked and cleaned all grounds and all battery connections are tight.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Colin

Check the "77 connector" where the stator plugs into the harness. They can overheat and develop intermittent connection with the symptoms you describe.

Since you seem to have covered all of the usual suspects, might not hurt to confirm the 77 connector has not failed again. Could happen.

Might do to replace the relays. The ign relay may be in a prefail mode, or the relay contacts may be loose or have corrosion.

If that doesn't work, I would be checking the wiring harness in the area of the steering stem.

Hope this helps, Dave

Was the 77 connector replaced with the new upgraded part or the same connector that was deficient? If you are unsure, here's a good link that details the whole thing and has picture of old and new connectors. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PHtueqN_lT3Ftk VRAdt0Ss1NloiK-8XBK824hhT31vI/edit?pli=1

Are all years vulnerable to 77 connector problems? Should I order the kit for my '07 XB12S, just in case?

Just a minor correction, the 77 connector connects the Voltage Regulator to the battery, not the stator connection. Either way, if the connector fails, you won't be charging your battery and will soon be walking.

All 03-07 models. The 08+ bikes have a different charging system, so they aren't affected, and Buell released the replacement connector kit for the older bikes around the same time. If you order a new VR these days, it has the new connector on it and the other connector to crimp onto your wiring harness. Given that the kit is $20 and prevents the issue from ever occurring, it is well worth getting.

Thanks, sounds like a good idea. One of my bookmarked sites says the kit PN is Y1312.02A8. Is that right?
