S32 - I saw that equation on a performance car site somewhere & lost it!

FTD - I have met all the pros over the last 10 years at the pro tour in the Northeast. I got to hang with Shaun Murray at OWC for an afternoon once. Nice kids - all of them. This shot is me on the Delaware River. Btw do you know a fellow wakeboarder from Orlando named Fred Rabe?

Like S320002 pointed to it's the tuned length at certain rpm that does "something". That's why I feel the 12 airbox lid on the XB9's does something because it effectively increases the stack length.
Blake, supersonic airflow does involve compression/compression waves.
I just love how most here seem to be getting into this discussion, even if we don't know what we are talking about, at least we are THINKING about it as well! : )

Opto - You may be right. The 12s airbox actually restricts flow into the stack if you look at how close it is to the top of the stack. The side entry area is about half of the area of the top of the stack.

Yeah, there sure is less volume in the XB12 airbox cover. The dimple gently directs the airflow down into the stack.

I disagree about the 12 lid restricting airflow. If you think about it and look at that picture the area above the stack on the 9 lid isnt supplying any air into the stack, all the air is coming only from the top of the air filter element to the bottom of the air filter element, the are above is dead air or even a vaccum at high RPM. On both lids the filter lip is at the same height.

Oh yeah and my thought is dimples would be bad m'kay cuz the sides of the stack are designed to drag the air in a specific direction m'kay and dimples means less drag toward the tb and less drag is bad m'kay.

I have a question that has been nagging at me for some time and I think those of you hear talking about this stack could probably answer.

What if you put a powered, variable speed, fan over the stack to boost the air flow? The thought being that if you can't get the engine to suck more in you force feed it.

Would this be a hillbilly turbo?

Oh boy,
what a discussion.
To make a long story short:
if you remove the airbox cover and filter element you will end with the highest flow rate the stock system can handle. You may change the rubber stack with a high performance CNC milled dimpled air space technology stack but you wonīt gain any air speed as you canīt increase flow volume. It is limited by the throttle body and head flow capability. You will be able to change the engines character a little bit by using different length stacks. Thatīs it.

But if you increase air density you can indeed get more air into the cylinder... I don't think a fan itself will do that (I think it's been tried many times on different platforms). I think that cooling the air is one of the better improvements we'll be able to make w/o resorting to boring throttle bodies and head porting and that sort of thing. I think I'll be picking up a hillbilly motors reflective mat at some point.
