Needing some advice on what else I need to look for.
I believe my starter on my 2003 XB9R is failing.
I have a new battery installed and it is at full charge (13.1 volts).
Starter acts like it is not getting enough power. Slow turn over or solenoid starts clicking. After the motor would get to operating temp it will start fine.
Going out to check the wire connections today.
It was doing this before I replaced the battery. The battery I had in it was 4 years old and I figured it needed a change anyway.

Before I go get a stater, if needed. What starter will fit?

I have a lead on two, a 2004 and a 2006 XB12 starters.

Check that you didn't replace an old and weak battery with a new one that is not strong enough.

You would get the same symptoms.

XB batteries require a stronger CCA than most other bike batteries so double-check the specs.

Slow turnover cold and okay hot tells me that it's probably not the starter that's the problem.

I agree, sounds more like a battery issue. Try a set of jumper cables connected to a car and see if it starts cold better than normal.

My XT does the same thing. It's an '08, so last fall I assumed I needed a new battery.

Once I pulled the battery and headed to Interstate for options, I had them check the battery I pulled compared to a new one. They ran a Load Test on both and my old battery checked out better than the new one.

I wish I understood batteries more, but that lead me to believe my battery was ok. My XT turns over really slow as well though.

Regarding the starter itself, all air cooled Buells use the same starter, it is even a common part with the Sportster too, so it isn't something hard to find new or used.

I have the exact same problem but my starter spins the engine easily until I ride more 15 or 20 miles in warm weather. Then, if I stop for less than 15 or 20 minutes, it acts as though the battery is dead. After that amount of time, it starts right up. Replacing the battery made no difference.
The symptoms when hot are like that of a dead battery: starter will not spin the motor and the solenoid clicks.

Just installed this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-STARTER-MOTOR-HARLEY-D AVIDSON-SPORTSTER-ROADSTER-BUELL-BLACK-1-4KW-80-10 09-/120833082602?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories& hash=item1c223684ea&vxp=mtr

1.4 KW vs 1.0 KW on the stock one. $139 vs $375 for the stock one from my local H-D/Buell dealer.

Bolted right in and works great. My old one died a slow death, which made me think my battery was going.

My bike cranks better now than it did when it was new.

check your cabling, especially where the lugs crimp on. This happened on my sporty, and the strands in the cable were corroded and breaking.
