I was really hoping to get to 100k before having to split the cases.

On my way to work this morning the bike developed a rattle similar to a loose primary, and the speedo would jump around intermittently. In checking it out after getting here I noticed the belt was loose. I pulled the pulley cover, and I can move it side to side visibly. b000! I'm not sure if the 'shelf shifting' was a symptom of this or not.

debating whether to brave the trip home or not...

face it; your bike is in need of repair.
there is no debate; further riding will only make the damages/repair costs worse.

call a buddy with a truck and get your bike home/to a repair shop.
it's better to do make the phone calls now from the comfort of your work office instead of from the side of whatever road you will be stranded on later

I know, arrangements have been made. Just venting is all. It made it to 66,600 (yeah, really...) without needing to take the 'ride of shame' in the back of a pickup.

I probably won't be able to get around to fixing it for a while though : (

I had to fix the moral equivalent of that on my M2 (which fortunately for me did not require splitting the cases, you aren't so lucky).

I wouldn't drive it. That means either your outer 5th gear drive assembly bearings have lost the balls from the race... or your 5th gear drive assembly inner needle bearings (that support your output shaft) are gone. I'm guessing the latter.

In the first case, you are risking case damage. In the second case, you are risking that one of those needle bearings is lurking in the tranny (and your output shaft is probably already ruined).

eh, its barely 10k a year since new.

I knew this rebuild was coming. I am disappointed that I no longer get to show off my odometer as a testament to Buell reliability to silence the naysayers though. I was also hoping it would come after I had another bike to ride, so I could get my fix while taking my time rebuilding it, possibly doing some stuff 'while I'm in there'...

Unfortunately it will be a while before I can get to it I turn into such an emo kid when I don't get to ride...
