Tranny grinds going into second.. clutch adjustment doesnt help. Any ideas?

Push harder on the lever. It will grind if you pussyfoot it. The 06+ bikes are better in this regard, but the older ones pretty much require you make sure you are committed.

Also, check that your primary chain is adjusted correctly.

Harder shift is better but still grinds. Primary chain is spot on.. Thinking a case split is in my future.

Is it "clunking" into second, or actually grinding.

Do you "preload" as in putting pressure on the shifter before pulling the clutch in?

Mine does the same thing, or did for a while. I changed the primary fluid out and the problem went away for the most part. It still does it on occasion, but nowhere near as badly. I'm considering throwing some Amsoil in there, or some Lucas stuff to help cushion the gears.

Remember, you're going through neutral to get to 2nd.

My solutions, in some vague order, have been to shift into 2nd at a lower RPM most of the time, shift into 2nd *hard* (kick it in there!), and not worry about a bit of racket. The oil change helped a lot. I really don't think it's a "split the case" issue unless it's *really* bad or you're getting a lot of metal in your primary oil.

Might try adjusting the shifter ergonomics to give better engagement during upshifts. I need to do that myself.

I did try a fluid change.. Its not a Buell clunky shift.. I have had several Buell's and this one is def a grind. If you run the RPMs up the worse it gets. I do have a small amount of metal but, nothing alarming to me yet.. I had one doing this before and it was the clutch not disengaging completely. I tried over doing my clutch adjustment to improve the shift and still grinds. Weird from a tranny with no syncros.. But it is only 2nd. Maybe a bent shifter fork??????? Ill try the linkage adjustment as well.. Wish a shift kit was easy...LOL

I hear ya, I wish they hadn't done away with the trapdoor, it'd make this so much easier.
I'm wondering if the clutch basket is ok.

What Glitch said, Perhaps a bearing is getting crappy in the clutch, making it drag a little all the time.

My 2008 XB12X lost the clutch bearing while it was still under warranty. Primary was full of water like chocolate milk :P.

Dragging bearing.. Hummmmm Does that still call for a split case or do you mean theres a needle bearing it rides on that might be bad? Thanks for the help guys.

I have found on my bike that if you adjust the primary to "spec" it will drag the clutch some and shift hard, especially on the 1-2 shift....my Blast was the same way.

Adjust the primary a fuzz looser and try some Amsoil 20-50 or Mobil 1 V-Twin oil.

If that don't help, when it gets bad enough to have your fill of it or it starts jumping out of gear....when you fix the transmission, have the gears back-cut for far more positive gear changes.

Other than that...you got to realize it has a truck transmission to go with the tractor motor : ).

My clutch bearing was the one that lives between the inside and basket. Made a quiet rumbling sound when in gear with the clutch pulled in.

You only need to pull the clutch to replace that one.
