This weekend I had a chance to race my 9R against a 12R. Obviously this is by no means scientific due to rider variables, but here are my observations.

The Bikes – Standard except for:-
XB12R – Race kit (Buell Pipe ECM, Air cleaner), full race fairing.
Tires: Michelin slicks
Rider: about 21 weighing about 170 lbs (All estimates I didn’t ask him!)

XB9R – Similar race kit (Wileyco pipe, ECM, air cleaner), standard street fairing – no lights.
Tires: Pirelli DOT race tries
Rider: 42, weight 210 lbs.

The Results

The track, Texas World Speedway is a fast 2.8 mile circuit with lots of fast sweeping corners. There is also a straight of about ¾ mile with about a 60 mph entry speed. This is normally where my XB9 gets blasted by the “other” bikes. Lowest gear used on the entire track is 3rd.

As luck would have it, we lined up side by side on the grid. I got a better start and ride through the pack to the first corner, so no real test here.

I held the XB12 off for 3 laps. Eventually he powered past me taking the entire length of the main straight to go from behind me to in front of me. I stayed with him for the entire race finishing about 2 seconds behind him. Often getting very close, but never close enough to try a pass.

My Conclusions

The Extra torque and power of the XB12 will probably be best realized in the lower gears, like 1st and 2nd. The XB9’s free’er revving engine goes some way to compensate for its power disadvantage against the 12 especially at speeds above 100 mph.

In short, there was very little in it in this test.

Oh…..just incase your wondering, we finished 8th and 9th in the race out of about 30 riders. My best finish for the day was 2nd in Middleweight Sportsman (1000cc limit, so no XB12’s here).

Mark
