I'm looking at a race ecm for my bike because I have a special ops exhaust installed. Are there any long term negative effects from using a race ecm compared to a stock ecm? I'm never planning on a track day with this bike.

Fuel mileage will go down so the expense of fuel will be more over the life of the bike.

Problems from running lean without the adjusted ECM could lead to engine failure from one of many causes.

I think the cost of the fuel and ECM will be better than cooking the engine from a lean running condition.

I noticed a fuel economy improvement with proper fuel mapping. I was able to net 75mpg once on my XB12 with Micron exhaust and American Sport Bike map.

But in general the bike will run much smoother and be happier overall being released of the EPA restrictions.

On the 08+ bikes we can't use ECMSpy to map our ECM's? Is that correct? So then the only way to have the adjustability that the 07's- have is to pony up $750 for the Erik Buell Racing programable ECm and then spend $400+ on a dyno trying to get a few more HP's out of it? Am I correct in all this or did I miss something?

Yes, you missed the new version of ECM Spy. :P Do some reading- ALL FI Buells are now tuneable.

You can also buy a 250.00 pre-tuned race ecm for the 08+ bikes. That's what I was originally talking about.

Yes. All FI Buell's are tunable to varying degrees using many different programs including ECMspy, TunerPro, Fuel Solutions Tuner, Directlink, and others.

Or you can spend the $250 on a fine Race ECM and be good enough. The fully tunable Erik Buell Racing ECM is a nice option if you know what you are doing : )

I emailed Erik Buell Racing and asked if they had a pre-tuned ECM for a Special OPS exhaust. They said the pre-tuned Drummer ECM will work perfectly. So, I ordered one and I'll let you guys know how it turns out.
