I see you did the same thing and pretty much put every screw back in after removing the part. Defiantly makes it easier when it comes to the assembly phase.

I'm in the same boat...everything in my case looks pristine to me. The crank looks good and has no real movement accept the standard side to side play at the small end. At this point I'm trying to decide if I should just put it back together and ride it till it blows. That way it should be obvious what the problem is. Or, I could just rebuilt the whole thing now while it's out and risk replacing a part that doesn't need to be. I'm having a hard time justifying a $500 flywheel assembly when I don't know/think it's the problem.

+1 to the bolts back in their home...don't want to forget where those go.

After I split the case tonight I'm thinking about taking it to the shop and seeing what they think. Not sure what kind of answer I will get since there is no real money involved to them for removing and installing a new bearing.

I decided to take it to the shop and have them look at it I should have an answer by Monday I hope. But right off the bat he did notice some play in the piston. I then tried and sure enough the front one was differn't then the rear.

It might be something to check on yours too. I had to make sure I held the rod securely while trying to rock it back it forth.

Piston pins/bushings will be a lot easier to replace than a rod bearing or pin. Hope that turns out to be it.

send the the crank, heads, tranny, cases to good buell or harley engine shop and have them check out the crank and all the bushings, gears etc, for you. don't put it back together with out checking out and verifing all the internal components condition

Night, thats a big 10-4 I only dropped off the lower end today but I am bringing the Heads tomorrow for them to look at as well.

I do have a little bit of movement with the wrist pins...how much movement did you feel?

it would be very nice if that was the problem instead of the crank.

Pat, My front had some play but the rear didnt at all. How does your heads look, any marking on the inside at all? My front has some very small scuffs. I tried taking a pic but it doesnt show well.

Top end will be much better to deal with! So did you finally split the cases, or did you just take the unit as a whole? If you haven't split the cases and they give you a thumbs up, then just gor for the top end. I would do new jugs and pistons if they are scored. Kinda blows, becasue you have to break the motor in again which means no riding above 3500 rpms (IIRC). Hope you get out of it pretty cheap. As far as the big sprocket nut...it is a 1 7\8" socket and can be gotten for $10 at tractor supply store. Harley wanted and obscene amount for their tool! I had to change out the gear for the belts system, but as the pics Patagonia showed, it is not necessary for the split.

my pistons and heads have a lot of carboning on them but other then that they don't look too bad. I don't see any signs of unusual contact. I'll go back over them in more detail this weekend.

I didn't split the case but the guy is going to just to make sure nothing else is going on in there. since its already to be split figured better to be safe then sorry. The Jugs are good, the rear is in great shape the front he said looks like it could be honed a little but nothing serious. I will deffinetly go with new rings. From what they suspect at this point is a possible Wrist Pin. I should no more next week.

You shouldn't have any play at all side to side and it took me two or three times to feel what he was talking about. Good luck I will let you know more as I go along.

Side to side, I would say it was more of a rocking then sliding. If I still had the engine I would take some pics. Once I get this all figured out I will let you know.

Have you seen anything abnormal at all on yours.

Both front and back pistons can slide side to side about an 1/8 of an inch. Both are able to rock a tiny bit as well.

Not sure about sliding may be ok My front can be rocked never looked at there side to side play. Someone with more knowledge may no better then me if thats normal. Since I dont have mine now I cant see how mine is.

WOW, I was just going to post and I saw your message Crazy!!!

I got it back yesterday and they said everything looked good besides the wrist pin on the front piston. All and all it was $142.50 for them to inspect and change the bushing, and clean the pistons. So today I will order the seal kit and button everything back up by the weekend if everything goes smooth. At this point if it is still making noise then a drummer or special ops is in my future.

If you want to wait to put yours back together until I do and see if the fix takes care of it I will keep you posted.

Thanks for the update...that is an unbelievable price for that. Did you take it to a Harley dealer?

Did they change the wrist pin bushing and wrist pin or just the bushing?

Hopefully that solves your problem.

FYI...i have a drummer and I can still hear mine knocking

I thank they replaced the busing but they did something with the wrist pin as well. I took it to a local bike shop who then sent it to a guy who is retired from a local Harley/Buell dealer. The owner of the shop is pretty cool pretty straight forward.

that sucks if I still hear the noise my only hopes was the drummer.

Sorry to put a damper on that...if this doesn't fix your knock, maybe it will be quieter then mine. Either way, you should buy the drummer.

Love the drummer...super deep v8 sound. Great performance as well. It would probably be a nice low end response increase for you coming from the race can.

I think the Drummer is going to be the winter project. After this engine thing I'm done playing with this thing. Now it will be riding until something breaks.

Let me know how things go. Are you thinking about taking it somewhere and letting them take a look.

I will more than likely take it to somebody...hopefully I can get as good a price as you did if I end up having a similar problem.

Did the shop recommend a specific sealant when putting your case halves back together?

It looks promising. I have the engine back in and she started . Now I don’t hear the noise but I still need to put the muffler on so that may be why I don’t hear it . But I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I should have it all back together tonight.

Thanks Pat, I get it all back together last night and did a 2 minute ride around the block. As far as the sealent goes they did that at the place I took it to. so I didnt have to place it back together. I only took them the case with the crank still in it. Now I just hope I put every thing else back together correctly.
