So much for a harely sponsered comeback when the economy is better. Well perhaps Eric can buy what he needs at a fraction of the cost for his new venture? |

It would have been nice if they offered all that stuff to EBR at the expected auction discounts before it went to auction. It would not surprise me to see Erik or one of his trusted friends at this auction trying to buy stuff to keep his racing business running (assuming that he didn't get some of the stuff he needs from HD when he left). |

So with all of this liquidation, anyone know where to pick up a new set of body plastics for cheap? |

i think someone in the area should go get some parts or tools and share the wealth with us. you know buy something for 100 and sell for 150. if nothing else go and relay what stuff is going for. i know i would buy a crap oad of stuff even if i could use it if i had the funds. |

Wow looks like no possibility of turning back now... I was still holding out hope that after the economy returned we would see the resurrection of Buell. Harley doesn't need innovation though, they have an image to sell. |

Those are all gone, they are all property of the moco. All thats left is furniture, empty tool boxes and some heavy equipment. Everything thats for sale is listed in the spreadsheet.

The liquidation wouldn't affect the places to get the plastics. Contact your local dealer or watch ebay. |

It's a shame to see dreams, good times and a bright future just being auctioned off like so much junk... |

"It's a shame to see dreams, good times and a bright future just being auctioned off like so much junk." True enough, but nice to see the EBR site start to fill up with products, etc. You gotta think he'll be back - there's obviously a dedicated group of riders out there looking for something like a Buell. |

To top it off, HD says they will need to SPEND $125 million to close Buell down. I think this qualifies as insanity, IMHO. |

Its not insanity, it costs money to close down a company. Between severance pay for employees, buying out contracts with Rotax, terminating building leases, funding the dealer rebates, and the list goes on. |

From the official Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
quote: With regard to Buell, the Company plans to stop production of Buell motorcycles at the end of October 2009 and remaining inventories of Buell motorcycles, accessories and apparel will continue to be sold through authorized dealerships into 2010. Warranty coverage will continue as normal for Buell motorcycles and the Company will provide replacement parts and service through dealerships. The decision will result in a reduction of approximately 80 hourly production positions and approximately 100 non-production, primarily salaried positions. Employment will end for a majority of Buell employees in December 2009. Due to the level of integration between Buell and Harley-Davidson, Buell is not considered a separate and distinct operation and, as a result, will not be presented separately as a discontinued operation. The Company expects to incur approximately $125 million in one-time costs related to winding down the Buell product line, of which approximately $115 million will be incurred in 2009. The Company estimates that approximately $70 million will relate to sales incentives, inventory write-downs and other incremental expenses, the majority of which will impact gross margins. The remaining amount, approximately $55 million, will consist of restructuring and impairment charges and will be classified as such in the income statement. This includes a $14.2 million one-time fixed-asset impairment charge recorded by the Company in the third quarter of 2009. The Company expects previously announced restructuring activities, together with costs associated with winding down the Buell product line, to result in one-time restructuring and impairment charges of $215 million to $245 million over 2009 and 2010, or an increase of $55 million from the estimate provided July 16, 2009.
$70,000,000 to move <2,000 bikes . . . you do the math. |

As someone I know who is a very successful businessman said to me, "I would rather have to pay taxes on good profit, than have tax write-off charges from losses." When they spent $110 Million on MV--about as risky as it gets--and then shutdown the first real American sportbike maker. They can call it restructuring and getting back to the core; but, there are only so many who love the "chopper" mistique. Me personally--the thought of owning a "Glide" later on in life is dead. |
