I was riding home friday and all was well. Then randomly I go to shift and while the pedal moves like it should there is no shifting happening.

I pull over mess with it for a while to no avail. Finally I tap the rod going into the transmission with the but of the screwdriver and it starts working again.

And to top it off, on a completely unrelated topic (I hope) the belt finally gave out 15 miles later.

Any ideas on the shifting problem?

It sounds like the shift linkage is loose on the output shaft. I know it seems simple, but did you check to see if was tight?

I did. Unfortunately it all seemed well. Everything moved together as it should.

One thing I just thought of, the shaft does seem to have some end play. It will move in and out a little. I can't say how much for sure. Maybe a 1/16? Maybe more/less.
