Ok, I have a wire short somewhere, I think its the ignition switch because when I jiggle the wires coming out of the bottom, it shuts the speedo display off, and sometimes while riding it will do that when I turn the bars. Im gonna check the ground at the neck tonight and maybe replace the bolt, because it looks rusted, but has anyone else had a prob with the ignition switch doing this? maybe loose connection internally?

I've got it going on right now. Best I figure its the ignition because i can play with the key and get things to light back up. I've not dug into it yet, but i've been told its a solder joint coming loose and is fixable if u can get it apart and solder it back together.

Yours may be further down the line as mine doesn't drop out after getting the key wiggled right.

I had the same issue, took it to the dealer and they fixed it under warranty. But they said it was a loose ignition wire.

I had a problem with the headlight sub assembly ground. It was hard to find but eventually I tracked it down to the ground wire going from the sub assembly to the frame. It was shutting off my lights and triggering my check engine light.

I'd look for a dangling connector and check the grounds. They are small wires and should not be free. I'd start with ignition connector #33 which is beneath the right side fairing and check the R/Gy wire.

I've hear of people having ignition problems on the tubers with the side mounted ignition switches when they had a heavy bunch of keys dangling from the switch. The weight of the keys and engine vibration eventually wore out the key mechanism causing the contacts to make and break.

This may not be your problem, but stuff like this does happen for a reason.

I had that problem on my XB9R. There are 3 ways to fix it. 2 of them you can do.

1. Remove the ignition switch body ( 2 phillips head screws), disconnect the connector at the other end and remove from bike. Push and pry the switch body tabs to separate it to get at the affected wire(s) fix/replace and re-solder as needed, assemble and install on bike.

2. Remove the ignition switch body as stated above, purchase a new ignition switch body about $30 bucks from the dealer and install.

3. Have the dealer do the whole job

When I worked for a major auto manufacturer, we had a car or more a week towed in with ignition switch issues. The 4 of us (service advisors) used to make a bet, usually for a lunch, about how heavy the key rings were. Those "girlie", foot long, 5 pound key rings beat up/kill the ignition switches as you drive. Never saw this issue without the heavy key rings.
