Just a Q but How important is that High Performance Oil Pump Drive Gear? I have a 05 9s with 19k on the odom. Is this some thing I should be considering? How important is this upgrade? | ||

I have no idea about the specifics but... I would think it wouldnt be a horrible idea if you can afford to get one... The fact that buell started using it stock (cant recall year) makes me think it must have some reliability benefits... Now are we all going to go get bigger crank pins and the new oil system? No. But if you can afford a piece or two it couldnt hurt. | ||

How hard is it to replace the gear? i have 25,000 on my 04xb12s and so far clean magnet when i change the oil every 1,500 miles. is their anyway to easily check this gear for wear? | ||

1,500 mile oil changes! How hard are you running the engine to warrant that interval? | ||

it's easier to check than replace. AFAIK you need to pull the oil pump and look up into the gear case with a flashlight. i am getting ready to do this on my M2, should be very similar since you have a pre 08. replacing requires removing the cam cover.... etc. | ||

"replacing requires removing the cam cover" Which requires removing the exhaust pipes to remove the cam cover and that means rotating the motor which is daunting for the first time. I am seriously watching my stock oil pump drive gear, with a Hi-Po gear and cam cover gasket on my shelf ready to go. there is a lot of info in the KV (knowledge vault) on this. | ||

I am currently in the process of changing this out in mine and I would just check it everytime you change the oil to look for wear on the gear. Just drop the oil pump everytime you do so which is no hard task at all just make sure you get another $1.50 gasket for it each time. I wish i would have checked mine when I changed the oil I could have saved alot of money but i also didnt know anything about this problem until it happended to me. | ||

What was the difference after the install? A better oil pump drive gear, and peace of mind. | ||

I do not use synthetic oil. I run Shell Rottella T. Dino oil in these engine start to breakdown between 1.500 and 2.000 miles I have read in a report. so i just change often. Nothing like clean oil in your motor, and even with this close interval of change, it is still less expensive than running synthetic. | ||

I think "High Performance" is a misnomer with that new oil pump gear, correct? If I recall, its the same gear in a different material. That means "Same Performance", but maybe for a longer time. | ||

Yes the '08+ pump gear is made of bronze, the older pump gear is made of steel. If you do a search, there are a few isolated cases of guys having the older steel gear shear apart on them for whatever reason. |
