Can anyone give me insight on how comfortable the XB12X would be as a touring bike vs. the XT? Obviously the XT is going to be better comfort since that was what is was designed for but just curious if the X would do just as good for my intended use. Looking to get a bike to do long rides with my girlfriend. Don't really see myself doing off-road riding but seems like there are better deals out there for the XB12X. Any information is greatly appreciated. Especially for those who have ridden both. Thanks! | ||

In your situation the first thing to consider would be your inseam. Bags come with the xt. | ||

Add the price of luggage to the X for a real comparison (and the shop labor rate for them to install it) for a fair comparison. If you never plan on carrying luggage and have long legs, then by all means get the X. | ||

There is no difference between the X and XT in seat to peg length. The main difference comes in the ground clearance and suspension length. If you weren't looking at it, I doubt your body would be able to tell the difference between the X and the XT for touring purposes. If you are height challenged, the XT will be easier to maneuver because of the height (almost 7" of ground clearance on the X). I don't like the stock luggage, so getting it as part of the deal with the XT isn't that big of a perk for me. You could buy the X, assuming that you have the legs to match, and buy whatever luggage you wanted. The only advantage of having the luggage installed by the dealer is that they will cover the luggage under your 2 year warranty. Some won't if you buy it and install it yourself. Depends on the dealer. With ANY other luggage set up, you are unlikely to need the warranty piece. With the stock luggage, you are. If you are NOT needing the excess capacity that the stock XT luggage offers, I would HIGHLY recommend the newer Outdoorsman luggage from Buell. It isn't as large, but it is more durable with a better latching system. If you plan on doing much off paved road work, I would recommend the X. | ||

I guess from the perspective of intended use I would say simply; If you are going off road I'd go with Ft_Bstrd's recommendation of X. If you are not doing dirt and rocks, go with the XT, It is specifically setup for pavement and the pirelli street tires are great in wet and dry for me. PS if you get stock bags, I carry a tie down strap incase ( <- double indendre) I bust a latch  } | ||

Thanks guys. I think I'll be going down the XT path considering I probably won't go off-road. I've ready a few questionable comments about the stock bags (but not much detail). Are they poor quality? Thanks again for the advice. | ||

Secret: Strap is really for yard sale junk I find along the way. That's where my unused Nolan N100 came from. The guy's mom sold it to me for five bucks. Now, I'm looking for a full set of leathers.  Tool kit on the ulys should come with duct tape in it. Neither one does so, they are equal on that point. I do like the taller window. | ||

Are they poor quality? My biggest complaint has come from the latches themselves. I have broken two. They are plastic and are camming latches which means they place a strain on the latch if you have them full and try to use the latch to close the bag the rest of the way. The one on the left side of the bike is the biggest culprit. If you open a full bag while they are on the bike, you run the risk of not being able to push hard enough against the bag to get it to close without putting strain on the latch. You would need to pull the bag off the bike, put weight on it to close completely, and then latch the case to keep strain off the latch. I shouldn't have to do that. Yes I could carry less stuff, but if you are going to be gone for a week or so with varying weather conditions camping you will need all that stuff. I would see if you could get the dealer to swap out a set of the outdoorsman cases instead. It'll carry less stuff, but the latches are better. | ||

I bought the X and ordered only the mounts for the bags from Buell. All of Hepco & Beckers bags mount the same and since H&B supplies the bags that Buell uses, any of the H&B bags will clip right on. | ||

That's not entirely accurate. The factory Buell hoops have their latch point in the front of the hoop. H&B designs all their bags to have the latch to anchor the bag to the hoop in the back:   VS.  I verified it with the factory. As long as the bags you are planning to buy are NON-DIRECTIONAL, the stock hoops will fit other H&B bags. | ||

You'll love the XT. I traded my Road King for one a few weeks ago. I'm 5'9" and my feet just meet the ground flat footed with no load on the bike. Handles gravel and mud fairly well with the stock Pirelli Strada's. Would go to the Scorpions for any extensive gravel/dirt road travel (like a Prudhoe Bay, AK trip). I have pretty much verified that the H&B bags fit. Found some off a KTM 990 Adventure, but they were too beaten up for what the seller wanted. Measurements match up, but the latches may have to be reversed, which is no big deal. After looking at the Touratechs, I'm saving my $$$ now for a summer purchase. Anyone looking for stock XT bags, mine are for sale. | ||

The Outdoorsman bags and rack have the mounting clips in the rear. They WILL accomodate ANY of the H&B bags. If possible on the XT, see if they will swap out a set of the outdoorsman bags and rack. It'll give you more luggage options in the future. If not, buy the Outdoorsman bags and sell the Stock Buell bags from the XT. | ||

SHHHHHHHH! I ride with the R/S wheels off road with NO problems. On Pilot Road 2's even. Big girl panties not really needed. Unless you're Slicker and like that sort of thing.  | ||

I just dont understand the trepidation and anxiety about running the XT off pavement. It'll do fine on everything except single track. (its too big and porky and geared wrong for that) | ||
