Does it fire on the next try? What's the most number of times you had to try to make it light?

Once again, mine has done this from day one. Every once in a while it will not fire. Have fun chasing ghosts.

If he tested the new power lead to the HID, and it worked every time it was switched while testing, that would show nothing in the new harness was at fault.

There are two causes for this, assuming you have ruled out a bad electrical connection.

First off your Ignitor is going bad. The ignitor is what "jolts" the arc lamp on, then the ballast takes over and maintains the arc. If it cannot produce enough high voltage the lamp won't fire very easily.
A lot of the cheaper HID kits really cut corners in this area.

The second culprit is the bult itself. As a xenon bulb ages it requires more startup voltage, and more running current to maintain the arc.
Most high quality ignitors/ballasts are designed with extra capability to handle this. The ignitors usually try to fire the lamp 3-4 times before giving up, at that point they need to be reset (cutting the power accomplishes this)

It has always fired up the very next time.

I figure the whole HID kit for both sides were $200. I chalked it up to being a cheap setup and I'll live with the quirks for that price.

$200? Does it give a happy ending? : )

There is a thread in the BB&D about a kit thats about $70 for both. I just spent $120, but I went with a brighter setup.

May not be related Froggy but I had my ecm out of my 07 Bolt and noticed that the wiring to the instruments had chaffed through the insulation.

Might be worth a check?

I found them cheaper and more expensive as well. I figured I'd go with a mid-priced setup with the slim ballasts.
