Only variable? Says you.

Well, no, not my idea. What else except fuel rail temp is affected by mounting a RSS, that will subsequently affect icing?

Regards,
Gunter

Yes, but the main requirement for icing is that the humid air's dew point needs to be reached. How many iced vacuum cleaners did you see in your life? Do the tubes even feel colder than anything else? No, at least not those I touched in my life.

Chances are, a vacuum cleaner not icing up is due to the fact that the air isn't moving fast enough, the ambient temp isn't low enough, the air isn't humid enough, or a combination thereof.

Try this experiment with something a little more extreme, like a pneumatic die grinder. Same principle as a vacuum, just in reverse. As the air accelerate out of the tool, the whole thing gets freezing cold.

From Ask Abe: "It turns out that if this scoop has too big of an opening, the airflow is not directed to the fuel rail as effectively." - i.e., does not cool sufficiently.

From Blake: "Anony basically confirmed that there is an issue with the larger RSS subjecting the fuel rail to excessive cooling airflow which hinders fuel vaporization."

Please explain to me what I've misunderstood.

Ya know... sometimes BadWeb gives me the feeling I'm watching a BAD courtroom drama. It really is amazing how so many of us just grab on to a single misspoken statement and just tear and tear and tear at it like a starving badger.

You can almost hear the actor playing the District Attorney saying: "On this date, and approximately oh nine hundred hours you are on record as saying such-and-such. Are these your words, Sir? Yes or no??"

And on and on and on and on.

Jesus Lord in Heaven just let this thread DIE!! If I start posting NSFW JPEGs here, will the moderators delete the thread? Is that what it will take???

Time to heal.......

and a 1 and a 2 and a 3....

Show me the way to go home
I'm tired and I want to go to bed

I had a little drink about an hour ago
And it went right to my head
Where ever I may roam
On land or sea or foam
You will always hear me singing this song
Show me the way to go home

A vacuum cleaner doesn't typically enjoy the effects of evaporative cooling, nor does it have a venturi or throttle. Put some rubbing alcohol on the back of your hand and wave it around to get the alcohol to evaporate quickly. Describe the sensation. Now imagine the relative effect of a 60 mph stream of cold air.

Gunter,

Use your imagination. Is it only the fuel rail that would be subject to increased cooling airflow? Huh?

Mark (Xl1200r),

"Please explain to me what I've misunderstood."

You no understand how read. Me try help you.

Abe talk hot not-moving bike with RSS not cool fuel rail.

Abe not talk cold moving bike.

Cold moving bike different, not same-same hot not-moving bike.

Cold not same as hot. Moving not same as not-moving.

RSS make good cooling for moving bike.

RSS not make good cooling for not-moving bike.

One way (bike no move) RSS not make fuel rail cool.

Other way (bike move fast) RSS make fuel rail cool.

RSS maybe make too good cooling for moving bike on cold day.

You still no understand, me no can help.

Nice backtracking.

I think I'm done here. If you can't bother to have a dialogue with me without childish cave man speech, then why should I.

Use your imagination. Is it only the fuel rail that would be subject to increased cooling airflow

Imagination offers space for a lot of thoughts ... The first one came up, the RSS cools down the rear cylinder, the next one with an overcooled fuel rail. Now it's the manifold. What's next? If we keep that pace, the RSS will start cooling my beer inside the fridge very soon ...

To give you my version why carbs are sensitive to icing and FI not: it's the hydraulic diameter and the resulting air speed at the position of fuel supply.

Regards,
Gunter

Sure .. . Abe has had a book out for about 6 or 7 years now. One of the most respected trestisi on modeling, FEA and so forth.

He is as well known for his thesis on "The Dynamics of Two Wheel In-Line Vehicles" at Cal Berkeley.

I run into him most frequently in technical, mostly non-motorcycle, magazines where he is interviewed on various design and engineering topics.

Perhaps one of the smartest and nicest folks, right up there with my Uncle the Astronaut, I've ever met. Dangerously smart and equally as nice.
