On my way to the IBEW group ride this morning my rear wheel bearings decided to commit suicide. Not bad cosidering they were the black ones. From the looks never replaced, and the bike just kicked over 14K miles. Call for a truck to get me, he called Douche Rossmeyers for me on the way, (I love my friends) new ones... $40 a piece for front. $50 a piece for rear. Does this sound about right? I'm gonna give Seminole Buell a visit soon. |

Does this matter if I'm not the original owner and I didn't buy it from a dealership? |

It doesn't matter. If Buell made a recall the VIN is all you should need. |

Yep... recall item and I think it's free. You might tip the tech though. They have never been replaced if they are black (or they were replaced with old ones...). |

*$#@! I drove down to meet my friend at the Sportsbar near a local HD/B dealership. Went into tech and service dept. and the guy said there are no active campaignes for Buell recalls except for my XBR has a potential headlight reflector deterioration problem. And the guy started ushering me towards a drop off date. I'm sick of the HD pr!cks being so ignorant towards anything that lacks chrome. So can anyone get me a number or an offical document number or something....? |

You should be able to get the bearings free since the was a recall. If for some reason you can not, you do not have to pay $40/$50 apiece for HD bearings. The front are 6005 bearings and the rears are 6006. Any bearing distributor should have them. $40-$50 bucks is crazy. You can get top quality (SKF, INA/FAG, NTN, NSK, ...) bearings for half that or less each and replace them yourself. You want to look for 6006-2RS bearings. The -2RS suffix translates to a 6006 size bearing with two rubber seals. |

The reason you have to pay more at a dealer is because those bearings sit for a long time on the dealer shelves so you're also buying the "convenience" value of having the dealer forced to stock them. Unless you have a common bearing type, odds are your local bearing supply shop will have to order them so the bearing supply shop doesn't have to waste space on low turn over items in their inventory. Also, not all bearings are "equal". While they may have the same diameters and materials, the radius of the shoulders may be different between brands. When you buy the dealers bearings, you are buying "THE" bearings that come from the factory that have been tested and backed by Buell. Most of the time after market bearings won't cause any problems, but there are cases where it can. Not making excuses for "high" dealer prices, but just sharing the realities of the business. |

NTN bearings are good and have done thousands of miles on the sleds and other toys....just to add my .02 Good luck and I would call Buell about it. |

Actually if I got the dealer ones, its a 2-5 week wait period for them to get the bearings. Bruce "Douche" Rossmeyers Harley Davidson has no love for their Buell stuff. They have or maybe had one dude there that was pro-Buell, Clayton Sharp I believe was his name, tall hairless guy. There were 3 1125's, 2 XB12XT's and an STT. Might have had a blast not sure, but among the 800+ bikes 6 Buells total. |

I just had the bearings done at my dealership last week. Those prices were exactly what they told me. They showed me the bulletin and it was NOT a recall, but a safety upgrade. Further search on badweb while they had the wheels confirmed it was an upgrade and not a recall also. After a few words they called Buell and decided to cover it for me. These were the 2003 black bearings. |

I did also go to a bearing supplier while waiting for the dealership to call me back and the NTN bearings were about 8 bucks cheaper for each one. |
