The right side air scoop enhancement has followers and detractors... Buell is opposed to equal sized left and right scoops, as they want a flow from left to right side. Has anyone tried using a BIGGER left sided air scoop? Seems it might work well... either with stock right side or maybe bigger (but not as big as left).

On race bikes some use a larger oil cooler and a larger scoop that goes with it.

Because of the plumbing, and cost involved not many do this mod for the street.
It won't work with the stock oil cooler and frankly isn't needed on the street.

If you want to try a bigger scoop I don't see it having a negative effect other than
causing a bit more drag at speed.

It is possible to overcool an aircooled cylinder, but I think the inlet can't get much bigger due to the restriction and limit to the outlet of hot air.

I've yet to understand why people mess with this. They work just fine stock...

Yes, it is possible to over-cool an air cooled motor, it is not likely though considering
the limitations on air flow imposed by the proximity of the frame to the rear cylinder.

It is also technically possible to over-cool the oil, but once again even in cold weather
riding this rarely happens.

Why do people mess with this? Simple. The urge to modify and attempt to improve the bike
is at the heart of many riders interest in motorcycling. Nearly all motorcycles are modified
in some fashion by their owners within the first week of ownership.

Believe me, I understand that. I just don't understand why so many people screw with something that works properly, thinking they need to make it work better.

Of course, 70-75% of the work I do nowadays is fixing something someone "fixed" that wasn't broken to begin with.

So, Um, Yeah, pull both scoops. It'll run great, for really long time!

No need to be prickly about it -- personally I learned way more about computers by breaking them and then having to fix them than someone teaching me the "correct" way to do things. Personally, I figure as long as a person takes responsibility for their mods and any issues that come up from them it is just fine for people to do whatever they want to their motorcycle.

Now, people who futz with stuff and then act indignant and rude when you inform them the damage they have done -- those people can spin as far as I am concerned.
