I've been reading a bit about the interface cable and have have become sufficiently confused about which FTDI 'thingy' I need. I don't claim to be computer literate, especially cables and adapters. Can anyone offer some insight? There is a number of options on the website.

does anyone have a cable I could borrow or buy?

Thanks,
Chris

Its a BREEZE! Youll never look back, just be careful tuning and let your spark plugs talk to you...

Is this the entire cable? Or do you have to buy something else and do some splicing...?

Pretty sure this is the right socket. I think it comes with the metal pins, not 100% sure of this though.

Also, here is the instructions for building the cable.

It's easy just solder the wires to the deutch connector pins and assemble to the terminal hsg. as follows
Pinout
!-Orange Tx
2-Black Gnd
3-Yellow Rx
4-not used

ecmspycable

Looking at the website that you order the plug from, it sounds like it does come with the sockets that the wires splice/solder onto.

CAUTION - if you READ your sparkplugs you CAN MISREAD THEM!!!

IF you are going to use the sparkplugs - you MUST run at constant throttle position and RPM for maybe 10 or more seconds, pull in the clutch and instantly KILL the engine and coast over. THEN you can pull the plugs and "read" them. Fuel injection is radically different than carbs when "reading" plugs.

If you do anything else with throttle and RPM, you are going to be forcing the engine to be running all over the map and you can totally misinterpret the results.

Yeah, What he said, and you have to do it for every RPM Range you want to check. A dyno is MUCH easier but also $$$$$

One bit of info when building the cable, and when loading the drivers.

Building the cable:
Don't cut the in-line connector off. You can pull the pins out by lightly prying the plastic tab up, then pulling the wire out. The connectors on the ends of the wire fit better into the Deutch socket. It makes a stronger connection.
Crimp the Deutch barrel on to the end, and put a tiny bit of solder on it to ensure a good connection.

On the USB/Serial driver:
When installing the driver, make sure that you disconnect from the internet when installing it. It will try to access the internet and many folks have had problems with it locking up when it does. When you download the necessary files, everything you will need will be in the zip file.
Also, there are two parts to the driver install. One for the USB device, and one for the cable.. Don't interrupt either or it will hang on you.

Other than that, easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Also... make sure you look into megalog viewer.

You'll need to tell ECMSpy to log in that format, and you'll need to load the output with Excel first. Change the "EGO_Corr" column to "O2" (I think it's "EGO_Corr"... the one with values between about .3V and .85V anyway) so it will pick up the NB O2 sensor output correctly. That way VE Analyzer will work ;). Be sure to save it as comma delimited when exiting Excel (Or Calc).

Also...

When carrying your running laptop on your back for data logging... Make sure it has ventilation : ).

Oh and...

Be careful ;).

Oh... And some thanks (in a big way) to the creator of the software.

now for the really dumb question: what do i plug the deutsch connector into? i have an '04 xb12r. the ecm is behind the windscreen, or at least that's what the manual tells me. i also have a grey plug hanging just below the windscreen (bundled niceley but still hanging). might that be it?

Willie,
The grey plug is probably what you are looking for. It should be square on the end with 4 pins. It should have a rubber boot on the end to protect it from the elements.
I think the ECM connector is the only Deutch connector that is there.
On the XBS's, the ecm connector is right next to the ecm, usually attached with velcro to the bottom of the pan.
