06 lightning XB9 CityX

In the process of pulling the rear tire off my bike I removed the front sprocket cover. I was fairly suprised to discover the sprocket was completely covered in surface rust. This is my daily ride during 8-9 months out of the year so it has seen some rainy days.

Is this something I should just pull off, take a wire brush and some brake cleaner to? Would a light coat of paint be a helping hand to prevent future surface rust? Not sure about belt seating issues could it be powder coated w/o causing issues.

Probably a n00b question but I guess someone has to ask...

They all look like that, it's normal.

I am careful to always keep mine covered with a protective layer of fine surface rust. That keeps it from getting all rusty and stuff. ;)

Reep is correct, the surface rust protects against oxidation.

Totally normal for it to be rusty looking.

Yeah! What Spatten said. It has *nothing* with me being too lazy to clean and paint it ;)
